Like vibratory lights, infrared, and radio waves, ultraviolet lights are also electromagnetic radiation. On the spectrum, UV light is between violet light and X rays with wavelengths ranging from 4 to 400 nanometers.
Although it is not seen with the naked eye, we can note its effects due to excessive exposure to the Sun. Because this radiation causes sunburn, skin cancer, and other diseases.
Splitting Of Ultraviolet Rays
Scientists have divided the UV portion of the spectrum into three regions. Near UV (NUV), far UV (FUV), and extreme UV (EUV). The three regions have been separated on the basis of energy and wavelength of ultraviolet radiation.
Near UV, or rather NUV, is near optical or visible light. Extreme UV, or EUV, is the closest ultraviolet light to the X-ray and is the most energetic of these three types. Far-UV Wei is located between the FUV near-UV and EUV regions.
Electromagnetic Spectrum And Ultraviolet Radiation
Ultraviolet radiation is defined as part of the electromagnetic spectrum between X rays and visible light. That is, between 40 and 400 nm (30-300 ivy).
The UV spectrum is divided into vacuum UV (40-190 nm), UVC (220-290 nm), UVB (290-320 nm), and UVA (320-400 nm).
Sources Of Ultraviolet Radiation
The Sun is our primary natural source of UV radiation. Discovery Of Ultraviolet Radiation
Ultraviolet radiation was discovered in 1801. German physicist Johann Wilhelm Ritter observed that invisible rays beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum darken silver chloride-soaked paper faster than violet light.
He called them ‘oxidizing rays’ to emphasize chemical reactivity and also asked to distinguish them from the ‘heat rays’ that were found at the other end of the spectrum that appeared the previous year.
Chemical rays were adopted soon after. By 1903 it was known that the most effective wavelength was 250 nm. In 1960, the effect of ultraviolet radiation on DNA was established.
In 1893 ultraviolet radiation with wavelengths below 200 nm was discovered by German physicist Schumann and named vacuum ultraviolet.
Ultraviolet Rays And The Ozone Layer
The ozone layer is considered life-supporting because it has the extraordinary ability to absorb light of low wavelength that is less than 300 nanometers.
Where ozone is not present in the atmosphere, the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays will start reaching the Earth. These rays are very dangerous for humans as well as animals and plants. Ozone is found at an altitude of 60 kilometers above the Earth.
This area of the atmosphere is called the stratosphere. Its layer thickness above the poles is 8 kilometers, and its thickness above the equator line is 17 kilometers.
Deadly Effects Of Ultraviolet Rays
UV rays are also responsible for fatal diseases.
1. Darkening of the skin of the body.
2. Wrinkles on the body.
3. Old age comes before time.
4. Skin Cancer- Ultraviolet rays are the most prominent and universal cancer-causing agent in our environment. Each of the three main types of skin cancer is exposed to the sun. Research shows that 90 percent of skin cancers are due to ultraviolet radiation.
5. It also harms the eyes. These can lead to an increase in diseases like cataracts.
6. Scientists believe that sunlight can alter the distribution and function of disease-fighting white blood cells in humans through 24-hour exposure to the sun. This immunity can cause significant damage to the system due to repeated body exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
7. These rays also have a negative effect on plant growth. For example, it reduces the process of photosynthesis. Due to these rays, germination of seeds occurs late in plants and crops.
8. People speculate that damage to the ozone layer affects aquatic ecology, especially fish.
Benefits Of Ultraviolet Rays
Our body requires UV from the sun to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D helps strengthen the immunity system of bones, muscles, and the body.
1. UV is used in the treatment of skin diseases. Like psoriasis, in this disease the skin sheds its cells very quickly and develops itching patches. Ultraviolet exposure slows the growth of skin cells and relieves symptoms.
2. Research shows that sunlight stimulates the brain to produce certain chemicals. Like tryptamines, these chemicals improve our mood.
3. Ultraviolet radiation is not like sunlight or heat that we can see or feel. Your senses cannot detect UV radiation.
