Other risk factors contributing to AMD are smoking, diet, genetics, and light iris coloration.
Even exposure to blue light at night disrupts sleep patterns and causes many other diseases. Exposure to blue light at night causes changes in circadian rhythm, low leptin hormone levels, and suppression of the melatonin hormone. Low levels of the leptin hormone make people feel hungry even after eating dinner. Suppression of melatonin affects circadian rhythm because the hormone is responsible for its proper regulation. People who get fewer night’s sleep are more likely to suffer from diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
LED blue lights, although environmentally friendly and contributing to being an energy-efficient light source, cause personal health problems as they produce less light than previously used incandescent bulbs. Coatings can be introduced inside bulbs and fluorescent lights to reduce the blue light they emit.
Because the amount of time and period of working in front of the screen has increased. Now we cannot completely remove the use of screens from our lives, but to maintain our health, we need to take some precautions to protect our eyesight from blue light, like
1. Glasses
The best way to protect eyes from blue light is to use good glasses to work on the computer. Computer glasses have a special coating on the top of the lens that prevents blue light from reaching the cornea of the eyes. This helps reduce digital eye strain caused by working on screen for long periods of time. If you work on a laptop or computer and have to sit in front of it for hours, it is advisable to buy good-quality computer glasses. You can also ask the optician to apply an anti-reflective coat to the lens to protect it from blue light from both sides of the lens.
If computer glasses are costing you dearly to buy, the cheaper option is to get protective coverings on the devices. Protective covering is a screen filter that limits contact with blue light. They are usually inexpensive and absorb blue light from the device, reducing eye strain. Installation of apps on devices that filter blue and green light at night can also be beneficial in controlling radiation exposure.
2. Eye exercises
It is beneficial to take a break after every 20 minutes of work. The ideal rule is to follow the 20-20-20 rule to reduce eye strain, dry eyes, and red eyes due to the screen’s long exposure to blue light. The rule says you should take a 20-second break after every twenty minutes to see an object that is placed 20 feet away. It has proved to be very helpful in reducing eye strain.
3. Iol
Intraocular lenses (IOLs) also protect against blue light as they block radiation reaching the eyes and prevent damage to the retina. Intraocular lenses are usually prescribed for people who have had cataract surgery because they require protection from ultraviolet radiation.
4. Low light
Using dim or low light at night can help maintain the melatonin supply and will not change your circadian rhythm. Use a red light table lamp instead of using a bright table lamp near the bedside. Expose yourself to sunlight during the day, as it will boost your alertness and improve your mood. It will also help you increase your ability to sleep at night.
Avoid using electronic gadgets and television screens two to three hours before sleeping. Because it will maintain your natural cycle of sleeping and waking up.
5. Healthy diet
Maintaining a proper healthy diet is also important for healthy eyes. Drink plenty of water and blink your eyelids continuously to maintain moisture in your eyes. Take some minerals and vitamins that are important for eye health. Nutrients such as carotenoids, lycopene, anthocyanosides, flavonoids, beta-carotene, and vitamins A, E, and B complexes help improve eye health. Doses of multivitamins and mineral supplements can help make up for the nutrient deficiencies in the diet you take. It is important to consult a doctor before taking any kind of supplements.
Making lifestyle changes and eating a proper diet can help reduce the chances of eye problems and give you relief from eye strain and headaches.
