Functions Of Hormones

Hormones are the ‘chemical messengers’ of our body. They are special types of chemicals produced by the body’s endocrine glands. These glands release hormones directly into the bloodstream, which then transports them to various parts of the body so they can function correctly.

Main Functions Of Hormones

Hormones regulate almost every activity in our body:

1. Physical growth: For instance, growth hormone increases our body’s height.

2. Digestion and appetite: Hormones determine when we feel hungry and how food is digested.

3. Mood and emotions: Anger, happiness, and stress are also regulated by hormones (such as adrenaline).

4. Puberty: Hormones like testosterone in boys and estrogen in girls bring about physical changes.

What Happens If Hormonal Balance Is Disrupted?

If a gland starts producing too little or too much of a hormone, it leads to health issues. For example, if the pancreas produces insufficient insulin, a person develops diabetes.
