How Much Harm Does Screen Blue Light Cause To Your Eyes? Know From The Doctor

Phones, laptops, etc. are very harmful for our eyes due to blue light coming out of the screen. In such a situation, let us know how much harm the blue light on the screen can cause to the eyes.

In today’s digital age, the use of smartphones, laptops, and tablets has become an important part of our everyday lives. From waking up in the morning till sleeping at night, most of our time is spent in front of some screen or the other. Blue light emitted from these digital devices is not considered good for our health. Blue light emitted from screens is especially considered harmful for eye health. Sitting in front of the screen for long periods of time causes problems like eye irritation, dryness, blurred vision, and headaches. In such a situation, the question often arises: does watching screens for hours cause more harm to our eyes? Let us know in today’s article to what extent screen blue light can harm our eyes.

How Harmful Are The Blue Lights Of Digital Screens For The Eyes?

“The amount of blue light emitted from the screen is much less than natural sunlight, so there is usually no risk of permanent or serious retinal damage. However, prolonged continuous screen viewing can lead to problems with digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome.”

Blue light is a high-energy visible light, which can reach deep into the eyes. Therefore, the problem is not just blue light but the habit of constantly watching the screen without taking a break. When we blink less for hours, the moisture in the eyes starts decreasing, which increases the problem of dry eyes. Additionally, using mobile phones late at night has a negative impact on the sleep cycle, as blue light can reduce the production of the melatonin hormone.

According to AAO, blue light emitted from digital devices does not harm the eyes forever nor increase the risk of blindness. Usually this can cause the problem of ‘digital eye strain,’ which is caused by continuously gazing at the screen for hours.

How To Protect Eyes?

You can follow these tips to protect your eyes from damage caused by blue light coming out of the screen.

1. Follow the 20-20-20 rule

Long-term screen viewing can cause eye fatigue, irritation, and blurring. To avoid this, it is necessary to follow the 20-20-20 rule. This rule requires that one should look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This relaxes the eye muscles, and focusing on something else also reduces eye strain. Therefore, adopting this habit regularly can provide relief from the problem of digital eye strain.

2. Keep the brightness of the screen under control

If the screen light is too bright or too low, there is more pressure on the eyes; hence, it is always important to set the brightness of the screen according to the light of the room. Too much screen glare can cause pricking in the eyes, while seeing in low light puts pressure on the eyes; using a blue light filter can also be beneficial.

3. Anti-glare glasses

You can use anti-glare glasses if needed, especially if you work on a computer for a long time. These glasses help in relaxing the eyes by reducing the brightness of the screen.

4. Reduce screen time in children

Even in children, blue light emanating from the screen can be harmful for the eyes and brain. In such a situation, you should limit screen time for your children also and prevent them from watching the phone too carefully.

Conclusion

Blue light coming out of the screen does not cause much harm to the eyes. Provided that a screen is used in limited quantity and the correct type. Using too much screen can cause dry eye problems in your eyes.
