Tonsil stones are small, hard, white or yellowish grains formed by food particles trapped in deep spaces (crypts) formed on the surface of the tonsils; dead cells; mucus; and bacteria.
Have you ever felt something stuck inside your throat or had bad breath despite brushing and rinsing thoroughly? Maybe because of tonsil stones (tonsil stones). Its medical term is “tonsilloliths.” These often aren’t harmful but can cause trouble and embarrassment.
What Are Tonsil Stones?
Tonsil stones are small, hard, white or yellowish grains formed by food particles trapped in deep spaces (crypts) formed on the surface of the tonsils; dead cells; mucus; and bacteria. Over time these substances accumulate, harden, and take the form of stones. Some stones are small, not even easily visible, while some can be oversized and cause sore throat or swallowing problems.
What Are The Common Symptoms Of Tonsil Stones?
1. Bad breath: It’s the most common symptom. Bacteria cause sulfur gas to form, which smells constantly.
2. Sore throat or pain (sore throat): A stone may cause irritation and pain in the area around the throat, even if there is no infection.
3. Swallowing trouble: Big stones give a feeling of being stuck in the throat while eating and drinking.
4. Ear pain: Even if there’s no ear infection, ear pain may be felt due to the throat and ear veins being connected.
5. Swelling and irritation: Tonsils may swell if there are large or excessive stones. In such a situation the risk of infection increases.
6. Persistent cough: Throat irritation may also cause a dry cough or frequent throat clearing.
What Are Tonsil Stone Home Remedies?
1. Gargle with lukewarm salt water: Gargling 2–3 times a day can loosen stones and reduce bacteria.
2. Coughing hard: Coughing lightly at times lets little stones come out on their own.
3. Use of a water flosser: Washing tonsils with a water flosser at mild pressure can remove stones.
4. Cotton swab removal: A clear cotton swab can slowly pull out the stone, but take care not to hurt yourself.
What Is The Treatment For Tonsil Stones?
1. Antibiotic: Doctors may give medicine to reduce bacteria and inflammation, but these stones don’t get removed.
2. Laser tonsil cryptolysis: In this, the surface of the tonsils is smoothed with a laser so that crypts do not form.
3. Coblation cryptolysis: It’s got the tonsil surface fixed with radiofrequency, a method considered safer.
4. Tonsillectomy: Repeatedly severe cases have these surgeries to completely remove tonsils.
Tonsil stones aren’t usually dangerous, but they can give you trouble. If symptoms are mild, home remedies are enough. But persistent throat aches, stinks, or swallowing problems, it’s important to consult an ENT expert. Right-time treatment and caution can help you relieve this problem.
