The nails that enhance the beauty of hands are called ‘dead cells’. That is, cells that do not have life. But these lifeless nails can tell a lot about your health. A research report by Clinical Dermatology Review tells that diseases related to many organs in the body including heart and kidney can be detected by looking at the nails. Clinical Dermatology Review conducted a study on this on 272 patients of Karnataka Medical College and Research Institute. In this study, patients of different diseases and changes in their nails were monitored.
Of the patients included in this research, 26 percent of the patients had respiratory problems. 21 percent had blood, 17 percent had liver and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) disease. While 12 percent of the patients had heart and kidney problems.
That is, in this research it was seen that in case of deterioration of the respiratory system, the most effect is seen on the nails of a person. Similarly, if there is any blood-related disease in the body, or any disease related to liver, gastro, heart and kidney, then changes start appearing in the nails. Overall, if someone sees any new change in the nails, then a doctor’s advice should be taken. Let us now know what kind of changes in the nails can be considered a sign of danger.
The nails of the hands and feet protect the skin underneath it from injury. Apart from this, nails also help us in scratching the body and peeling many things. But in the research of Clinical Dermatology Review, the color and changing shape of the nails have been linked to many diseases. In this research, many symptoms like swelling in the nails (clubbing), long striped lines (longitudinal ridging), yellowing of nails, discoloration and flattening of nails were noted. Sometimes more than one symptom can be seen in nails at the same time.
Research results say that symptoms like clubbing (nails getting curved and turning downwards) and longitudinal ridging (long ridges) have been seen in the nails of patients with heart disease. Dr. Sameer Gupta, Head of Cardiology Department, Metro Group of Hospitals, says, “Human nails are normally a little pink. If its color becomes light, then it indicates lack of blood in the body.”
“Similarly, if the color of the nail is turning blue, then it indicates cyanosis disease, which indicates lack of oxygen in the body and it can be due to any disease related to heart or lungs. To know what this disease is, special tests are done.” Cyanosis i.e. blue colour of nails also indicates the possibility of hypoxia, asthma, pulmonary hypertension.
Clubbing was the most prominent symptom in patients with respiratory system related diseases. After that, long striped lines, breakage of nails, discoloration have also been observed. That is, if someone is seeing these symptoms in nails, then they should contact a doctor. Dr. Rashmi Upadhyay, head of the Pulmonary Medicine Department at the Government Institute of Medical Sciences, Greater Noida, said that lung diseases start appearing as different symptoms in different parts of the body.
“Like – skin color becoming lighter. In this, the skin becomes thin and shiny. Many symptoms are also seen in nails, seeing which we guess that something is wrong with the lungs.” The first symptom related to nails is clubbing.
She says that “In recent times, cases of lung fibrosis (this affects the lung tissue and causes difficulty in breathing) are coming more. Due to lack of oxygen in the blood for a long time, the blood vessels reaching the nails become thin. Therefore, clubbing starts appearing in the nails.”
Apart from this, in yellow nail syndrome, nails start appearing thick and yellow in colour. Swelling starts appearing in the areas around the nail. These syndromes can be a sign of bronchitis, lung abscess and chylothorax. All these are lung related problems. By looking at the nails, you will know whether there is a gastro or liver problem or not.
Similarly, in a research of Clinical Dermatology Review, the most symptoms of yellow nails, long striped lines, clubbing and Terry’s nail (the part under the nail turning white) were seen in 46 patients with gastric and liver. The most effective symptom has been Terry’s nail. According to Dr. Sameer Gupta, clubbing nail, which is slightly curved and inclined downwards, tells about some chronic disease.
The report says that the most common cases of yellow nails, longitudinal ridging (longitudinal lines), half and half nails, obliterated lunula (i.e. disappearance of the half moon-like shape present in the lower part of the nail) and brittle nails (dry and brittle) were seen in patients with kidney disease.
Dr. Prajit Majumdar, a kidney specialist at Yashoda Hospital in Ghaziabad, says, “Half and half nails are the most common symptoms in patients suffering from kidney disease for a long time.” ‘Half and half nails’ means that half of the nail looks different and the other half looks different.
However, sometimes due to an injury or measures taken to enhance the beauty of nails, changes also occur in the nails. Therefore, it is most important to consult a doctor before reaching any conclusion immediately by looking at your nails.
