How Much Water Should One Drink To Keep The Kidney Healthy

Kidney is one of the important organs of the human body, which has many responsibilities to keep the body healthy. Doctors often advise that to keep the kidney healthy, eat a balanced amount of salt, avoid excess sugar and do not use painkillers without consulting a doctor.

Many other measures are also suggested to avoid excessive pressure on the kidney.

So is it necessary to drink a certain amount of water to keep the kidney healthy?

In this article, we will try to know the answers to some such questions.

The kidney works to maintain electrolyte balance in our body. It controls the amount of elements like sodium and potassium. Dr Vivekanand Jha, former president of the International Society of Nephrology and executive director of the George Institute for Global Health, is an expert in kidney related diseases.

He says, “The kidney removes unnecessary things from the body, which we take through food or other means.” Dr. Vivekanand Jha says, “The kidney also produces many types of hormones in the body, which include blood-forming hormone, blood pressure controlling hormone and hormone that keeps electrolyte balanced.”

Maintaining electrolyte balance is very important for every process related to metabolism in our body.

For example, a certain amount of electrolyte is necessary for every cell of the heart to function properly. If the electrolyte becomes unbalanced, then the functioning of the brain can be affected, muscle efficiency can decrease and the nervous system can also be affected.

Dr. Garima Agarwal, a kidney specialist at Manipal Hospital in Bangalore, says, “If the kidney does not function properly, then taking vitamin D will also be of no use. No matter how much vitamin D you take, it will not benefit the body.” Kidneys are also called a kind of ‘voltage stabilizer’ for the body. If a person drinks more water than required, then the kidneys remove the excess water from the body.

How much water is necessary to drink

Dr Vivekanand Jha says, “There is no fixed amount of water we should drink every day to keep the kidney healthy. The body itself tells us how much water it needs. Feeling thirsty is a sign of this.”

He explains that water keeps coming out of the body in many ways, such as through sweat and breath. Apart from this, there are some processes which are not visible, but in them also water comes out of the body. In such a situation, at least 700 to 800 ml of water is necessary for an adult person.

However, the body does not get its required amount by drinking only plain water, water also reaches the body through liquids like milk, fruit juice or buttermilk.

It is also important to note that the amount of water a person needs depends on his age, physical activity and environment. If a person lives in a hot climate, he will need more water.

Dr Shailesh Chandra Sahay, Director of Urology Department at Max Hospital, Patparganj, Delhi, says, “A normal person needs three to three and a half liters of water every day. It is not necessary that this amount is fulfilled only by plain water. It can be fulfilled by any kind of liquid. If we maintain the balance of water in the body, then the chances of urine infection also decrease.”

“For people who are suffering from heart or kidney disease, the amount of water is limited a bit, so that there is no excessive pressure on those organs.”

Dr Garima Agarwal says, “The kidney also balances the amount of water in the body. If you have drunk more water, then the kidney will throw it out, and if you are drinking less, then the same water will be saved in the body. There is no fixed amount of how much water someone should drink. However, generally a healthy adult should drink two to three liters of water daily.”

The need of water in the body also depends on the size of the person’s body. For example, small children need less water than adults.

Easy and basic ways to keep kidneys healthy

The most basic way to keep kidneys healthy is to eat a balanced diet, keep body weight under control and be physically active regularly.

Dr. Garima Agarwal says, “Kidney diseases are less seen in the Middle East countries, because people there consume less salt. Whereas in India, most people consume more salt, which affects the kidneys.”

When a person consumes salt or sugar in large quantities, there is additional pressure on the kidneys to keep it balanced. This pressure can affect the functioning of the kidneys in the long run.

Apart from this, many people struggle with high blood pressure for a long time, but do not take it seriously. According to doctors, high blood pressure directly affects the kidneys, because it has to work harder to keep blood pressure balanced.

Therefore, if someone has a problem of high blood pressure, then it should be controlled through medicines with the advice of a doctor.

Dr. Garima says, “I am not against herbal things, but whatever you eat, take it as per the advice of a doctor or expert. Do not buy any medicine from the shop yourself. Especially painkillers, because they can harm the kidneys.”

Another important advice to keep the kidneys healthy is to avoid smoking, because tobacco and its products also directly affect the kidneys.
