Researchers say that stethoscopes powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help detect three types of heart diseases in just a few seconds. The stethoscope was invented in the year 1816. Doctors use it to listen to the sounds inside the patient’s body. A British team has studied one such modern stethoscope. The team found that this stethoscope can instantly detect heart failure, heart valve disease and abnormal heartbeat. Researchers say that this device can prove to be a ‘game-changer’ and patients will get quick treatment. There is a plan to use this device all over Britain.
How does an AI stethoscope work?
The AI stethoscope has a small device in place of the part to be worn on the chest, which is as big as a playing card. This device can also detect the slight changes in the heartbeat and blood flow through the microphone, which cannot be heard by human ears. This device also performs ECG (electrocardiogram) tests. It records the electronic signals of the heart and sends the information to the cloud, where the data of millions of patients is analyzed through AI. This AI stethoscope has been created by the American firm Eco Health.
In a study by Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, more than 12 thousand patients from 96 clinics were examined with this AI stethoscope. These patients were compared with patients from 109 clinics where this AI stethoscope was not used. According to the researchers, the patients with heart failure with the AI stethoscope were 2.33 times more likely to be diagnosed within 12 months. Similarly, abnormal heartbeat patterns were 3.5 times more easily detected by this device. Abnormal heartbeats have no symptoms but can increase the risk of stroke. Heart valve disease was 1.9 times more easily detected by this device.
Timely treatment of patients possible
Dr Sonya Babu Narayan, clinical director and consultant cardiologist at the British Heart Foundation (BHF), said, “This is a great example of how a simple stethoscope made more than 200 years ago can be upgraded for the 21st century.” She said that such innovations are very important because often the disease is detected only when the patient reaches the hospital in an emergency. She said, “If the disease is detected in the early stages, then patients can get timely treatment and they can live a long, healthy life.” These results were presented to thousands of doctors at the annual Congress of the European Society of Cardiology held in Madrid. Now there are plans to use this new stethoscope in South London, Sussex and Wales.
