It can do your maths homework. It can answer your job interview questions. It can even be your therapist. Artificial intelligence (AI) now seems capable of doing everything with just a press of a button.
The technology is advancing at record speed as different platforms compete fiercely with each other to add new and advanced features.
ChatGPT is one of the fastest growing technology applications in history.
The International AI Safety Report, prepared by the governments of 30 countries and members of the United Nations, the European Union and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), shows that within just five days of its launch, ChatGPT had over 1 million users. Within two months, this figure had reached 100 million.
Microsoft, which will launch its AI assistant Co-Pilot in 2023, has said it expects revenue from its AI business to exceed $10 billion in the second quarter of 2025. It also says it has expanded its data centres to 60 regions around the world.
According to Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google parent company Alphabet, the AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of Google search results, called AI Overviews, are used 1.5 billion times each month in more than 200 countries and territories.
Experts say this technology is here to stay, so we asked them how to make the most of it.
Canadian computer scientist Sasha Lucchioni is the climate lead at Hugging Face, a global start-up that works with open source AI models and seeks to democratise good machine learning.
“I see AI as an enabler of humanity, both for good and for evil, but we have to make sure we’re in control,” she told BBC 100 Women.
Here are four questions she suggests anyone should ask themselves before using AI.
1. Is this the best AI tool for your need?
Luchioni says that AI systems are capable of doing a lot of different things.
She says, “Sometimes we turn to the most popular AI tool because we know them and they can do many things, but there are some tools that are made for some special work, such as only scientific questions to answer. Who can do really better.”
Many apps are being launched all the time, which have been made for many types of needs including small and big.
An app can tell the user to solve the problem of his maths by just looking at the picture. At the same time, another special app can help you to improve your recipe by looking at your food. At the same time, another app can prepare personal prayers for you by taking information from holy texts.
According to the 2025 AI index report of Stanford University, the US institutions made 40 notable AI models last year, while China made 15 and Europe made three.
So decide what help is being offered on a particular app and choose it according to your needs.
2. Can you rely on AI’s answers?
Luchioni says that AI can answer you, but it is not necessary that it is true or absolutely accurate.
She says, “AI models can also create things that are not in existence, and because they seem reliable. They can create many problems while using it at work or in school.”
To avoid this, she advises to always check the output of the AI system.
She says, “(to his answer) read in detail and think seriously what he is saying and understanding. AI may look full of confidence but still may be wrong.”
3. What information is being shared?
Luchioni says that the user should think about the information being put in the AI model as well as the information emanating from it.
The AI system works after mass collecting data and training the model with the same data. This means that whatever information you have put, whether it is a photo or text, the system can keep it safe. Also, by analyzing it, it can also have an impact on any other answer given in the future.
If every platform has a confidential policy of its own, then before using, read their conditions.
Luchioni says, “If there is a personal or sensitive data, do not put it in the AI model as it can be public on the Internet.”
She points to the Meta AI app, where some users were unaware that their promises are being published on public ‘Discover’ feed.
The BBC has found examples of people in which they are uploading pictures of school or university, test questions, asking sexual images and seeking advice for their gender identity.
Italy became the first western country in 2023 to stop the advanced chatbot of the Chat GPT due to the concerns of privacy and compliance with its general data protection regulation.
South Korea, Australia and America also expressed concerns about Chinese chatbott Deepcik how it store and process user data.
4. Do I really need AI?
Luchioni says that use AI as a tool, because it cannot replace your brain.
Consider whether this is the work that you can do yourself, or you can use other tools like calculator for some complex problems of maths.
She also advises that the help of people around her should be taken for moral and personal questions.
She says, “As what is right, what is wrong, what is moral in a situation and what kind of decisions we should not take, AI cannot take decisions in matters like human values.”
AI also uses a lot of energy and resources compared to traditional search engines.
Computer servers whose data centers uses data need to keep a large amount of water to keep it cool, which can make water supply problems worse around the world.
Luchioni says, “AI tools will definitely be present and especially because we are present on the Internet and social media and are very active.”
“But this does not mean that we have to use AI for everything in our life, because it will lose things like creativity, relationship and community that make us humans.”
