Nowadays people see a spherical bulge just below the neck and just above the back. Seeing this, the question often arises that why does this happen? In English it is called dodgers hump. Actually, all of us have some kind of curvature in the spine. But if this curvature is more than 45 degrees, then it becomes a cause of trouble and requires treatment. Sometimes no other symptoms are seen except the bulge in the back. However, many patients feel symptoms like back pain, stiffness in the back muscles, pain near the spine and fatigue. If the condition of kyphosis becomes severe, then the problems arising from it increase.
Kyphosis is a type of hunchback that can develop below the neck due to many reasons. Its main reason is sitting in the wrong way. Many people sit on chairs by bending or with their shoulders bent, due to which this problem often occurs. Carrying a heavy bag on the shoulder can cause pain in the back and shoulder muscles. This can cause the spine to become crooked. Sometimes this condition also occurs due to the spine not developing properly. This problem can also occur if the spine does not develop properly during pregnancy while the baby is there, or in some cases two or more vertebrae join together.
This curvature of the spine increases with age. This is the reason why many elderly people have a bulge on their back. Dr. Abhijeet Pawar of Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital explains, “The main reason for this is the wrong way of sitting. Sitting bent forward for a long time, looking at the phone while bending, using the phone with the head down and working on the computer for a long time can also cause this bending.”
According to Dr. Pawar, “After sitting in the wrong way, the second major reason for this is osteoporosis. In this, due to weakening of the bones, the spine gets injured and its curvature increases abnormally. Obesity also increases the stress on the spine. Also, kyphosis can also occur due to some medical reasons.”
Food and lifestyle are directly related to the body. To reduce or prevent neck hump, it is important to eat food rich in calcium and vitamin D. If the doctor advises, supplements can also be taken. For overweight people, losing weight can reduce the pressure on the spine. Apart from this, exercises like walking, yoga and swimming help in maintaining good posture. Exercises in the gym, such as weightlifting, help in strengthening muscles and increasing their strength.
The most important thing is to limit the use of screens. Do not bend your head down while using mobile. If you want to change your lifestyle, eating or exercise habits, it is important to seek the help of a doctor and a qualified trainer. It is best to get your body and symptoms checked by a doctor and make lifestyle changes based on their advice.
