CBSE Board has instructed all schools to install ‘sugar boards’ in view of the increasing risk of diabetes in children. This board will contain important information related to sugar intake like how much sugar can be consumed every day or how much sugar is present in junk food and cold drinks.
Along with this, through these boards we will have to tell about those health risks which occur due to excessive sugar consumption and what are the healthy options of sugar. With this, students will become aware about their food and will be able to stay away from diseases for a long time.
CBSE has also ordered that workshops and seminars should be organized in schools to make students aware about sugar intake.
Children becoming victims of type 2 diabetes
Dietician Nidhi Pandey says that cases of type 2 diabetes among children have been continuously increasing in the last decade. Earlier this problem was visible only in adults. A major reason for this is consuming excessive sugar. In today’s time, children easily get things with high sugar.
This not only increases the risk of diabetes but also leads to obesity, dental problems, metabolic disorders which also affect the long term growth and academic performance of children. Children between the ages of 4 and 10 should only have a maximum of 5% sugar of their calorie intake, but studies have found that this has now increased to 13%.
‘Eating too much sweets is causing puberty to come quickly’
Dietician Pandey says that by feeding too much sweets to children at a young age, their test sensations start becoming weak from an early age. In such a situation, they always start feeling the need for more sweets. Eating too much sweets can also cause digestive problems in children. Apart from this, the brain of children reacts every time they eat sweets. That is why nowadays it is being seen that children are hitting puberty quickly.
Apart from this, the problems of juvenile diabetes, BP, PCOD, PCOS, low testosterone and hair fall also occur due to excessive sweating. The dietician says that start giving sweets to a small child only when he starts asking for sweets and becomes potty trained. By this time, the child can be fed simple sugar like jaggery, bada etc. in controlled quantity.
‘Get used to less sweet from home’
Dietician Needhi Pandey says that if parents want to protect their children from sweets, then they will have to develop this habit from home. Besides, for this, parents will also have to change their habits. If children develop good habits at home, they will not even go out and ask for sweets.
Avoid storing sugar loaded things like cold drinks, chocolates, etc. at home. Along with this, frozen paratha and other frozen snacks also contain loaded sugar. Therefore do not use them. Apart from this, schools should strictly make rules that children cannot bring sugar loaded things in tiffin. Such items should not be kept in school canteens also.
Influencer Revanth Himatsingka had taken the initiative
Revanth Himatsingka, who runs a channel on social media platform Instagram under the name of Foof Pharmer, had launched a campaign regarding the Sugar Board. He had appealed that there should be sugar boards in every school. Revanth had also reached the sugar board in the ‘exam pe charcha’ held in January this year.
The campaign has started in many schools of the country
The campaign to reduce sugar intake has started in many parts of the country. Sugar Board workshops have started in the morning assembly at South Point and Aditya Academy, Kolkata. Apart from this, full time entrepreneurs are also being hired in schools.
