Robots used for agricultural operations can help workers perform slow, repetitive, and monotonous tasks to focus more on improving overall production.

Most Popular Applications of Robots in Agriculture

1. Harvesting and picking crops, vegetables, and grain crops.

2. Weed control in rice, maize, and other crops

3. Autonomous mowing, pruning, seeding, spraying, and thinning

4. Phenotyping

5. Sorting and picking fruits and vegetables like apples, potatoes, capsicum, tomatoes.

6. Utility Platforms

7. Soil Health and Crop Growth Monitoring: Engineers in multinational companies are developing sensors and various IoT-based technologies to monitor crop and soil health.

8. Predictive Agriculture Analytics: Various AI and machine learning tools are being used to predict the optimal time to sow seeds, get alerts on risks from pest attacks, and much more.

9. To improve efficiencies in the supply chain: Now companies are using real-time data analytics on data-streams coming from multiple sources to create an efficient and smart supply chain.

10. Agricultural Robots: Manufacturing industries are developing and programming autonomous robots to perform essential agricultural tasks such as harvesting crops and handling crops faster than human laborers.

Some examples of agricultural robots

1. Grain seeker sensor

A real-time smart machine that can read the needs of a plant and then precisely apply the amount of nitrogen fertilizer, weedicide or herbicides needed. The machine uses sensors to tell the plant what it needs.

2. Robotic Drone Tractor

A new generation of robotic drones is revolutionizing the way we farm, with the creation of different robots, drone tractors have become a part of the agricultural mainstream. The robot will decide how to sow, when to harvest and choose the best route to crisscross the field.

3. Use of drones for spreading fertilizer

A flying robot monitors the growing condition of crops on fields with camera equipment and an automated fertilization system on the front, the robot can fly autonomously and apply fertilizer independently in various crops like rice, maize, oilseed crops and pulses.

4. Use of drones for exploring new places

In underground coal or diamond mines, some areas are inaccessible. A company called Inkonova has developed drones that fly, drive and climb and use laser technology to scan various areas, and create 3D maps of them. With this advance aerial robotics technology, we will be able to send humans to any place not touched by man-made infrastructure.

5. Fruit picking robots

The research is still in full progress, especially when the robots need to be carefully designed so that they do not hurt the fruit while picking. One solution is the use of suction grippers on automated fruit picking machines.

6. Use of Robots for Cattle Grazing and Automated Milking

The milking of cows and other dairy cattle without human involvement. Automated Milking Systems (AMS), also called Voluntary Milking Systems (VMS) have been developed, these are commercially available since the early 1990s.

Scope of Farm Robots in India

Today scientists and engineers have developed different small and heavy agricultural equipment for the needs of traditional farming, but precision farming requires some form of robots and pneumatic mechanisms. Today robots have entered various fields they are being used for weed control, which will help in reducing the use of herbicides and the production will turn into an organic one, in the same way robots are being used for transplanting paddy seedlings to avoid intensive labor.

We have seen some impressive innovative technologies by various rural inventors, i.e., electric motors can be operated remotely by cell phones, this is very helpful for farmers in the summer season as the power supply is erratic. If we think about advanced intelligent machines in farming, then sensors or readers and hand-held PDAs are going to be very helpful in calculation and accuracy in farming. There are many obstacles in the agriculture sector in India low rainfall, drought, climate change. Farmers grow food for us but gradually farmers are decreasing in number. Many people are leaving the farming profession because farming is no longer profitable and no one wants to harm and it is becoming risky day by day. So, there are many disadvantages. But the application of robotics in agriculture is attracting the young generations who are not interested in farming, as they are ready to work in other industries and not in the farm.
