Apple iPhone users using WhatsApp will now be able to make the app the default calling and messaging app. This will eliminate the need for users to switch to Apple’s Phone or iMessage app to make calls or send messages.
The popular instant messaging platform has rolled out this feature only for iOS WhatsApp beta users. This feature can be used in the 25.8.10.74 version of the app. There is no information yet about when this feature will come for Android users.
Users will be able to make international calls without extra charge
This feature will be beneficial for those users who mostly communicate on WhatsApp. Making WhatsApp the default app will save time, chats will be more secure and users will be able to make international calls without paying any extra charge.
Apart from this, photos, videos and documents can also be sent directly from WhatsApp. Currently, only iPhone users will be able to use these features in the beta version of the app, but soon it will be rolled out for everyone.
How can iPhone users make WhatsApp the default app?
If you have an Apple iPhone, then go to Settings to make WhatsApp the default app for calls and messages. From here, click on the Apps option, here you will see different options for calls and messages for default apps.
Choose WhatsApp for the calling app and set WhatsApp for the messaging app as well. After this, whenever you tap on a number or send a message, WhatsApp will open instead of Apple’s phone or message app and there will be no need to switch apps again and again.
More than 30 filters in Camera Effects feature
WhatsApp has introduced several new features in 2025 to improve user experience. These features are rolled out from January to March 2025. The full rollout of some features is still pending, so if you don’t see them in your app, update the app to the latest version.
- Selfie Stickers: You can now turn your selfies into stickers. Use the camera option to create a sticker and share it in the chat. This feature is currently available on Android, and will soon come to iOS users as well.
- Camera Effects: You can use more than 30 backgrounds, filters and effects before sharing photos and videos in the chat. This feature was previously for video calls and status, now it has been added to regular chat as well.
- Double tap reactions: Double tap to instantly react to a message, which pops up your most used emoji. It is inspired by the feature found in Instagram and makes chatting faster.
- Sticker pack sharing: You can share your favorite sticker packs with friends directly in the chat. Tap on the three dots next to the sticker pack and select ‘Send’.
- Built-in dial pad (iOS): iPhone users can now make calls without saving the number by using the dial pad from the ‘plus’ icon in the call tab. This feature was earlier in beta, now rolled out to all.
- AI Studio: You can talk to different AI personalities through the Meta AI chat window. This feature makes chatting fun and interactive.
- Message with forwarding: Android users can now add custom messages while forwarding, making it easier to give context.
- Voice message transcript: Voice notes can be converted to text. This feature is currently available in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian, and it is being gradually rolled out to all users.
- Music on Status: In March 2025, WhatsApp launched the feature of adding music to status. Like Instagram, you can choose a song according to your mood and put it in your status.
