What Is Sleep And What Are The Disadvantages Of Insufficient Sleep

Sleep is a gift of nature for our body and mind. But nowadays, due to busy lifestyles and work pressures, our sleep is not complete. Factors such as hectic schedules, habits of sleeping late at night and waking up late in the morning, skipping meals on time, and the lack of regular yoga, exercise, and walks disturb our sleep. Therefore, it is essential to get enough sleep to keep the body healthy.

This blog explains what sleep is, problems caused by lack of sleep, and the benefits of good sleep.

Often, we find that due to long working hours, family commitments, or health-related issues, we cannot get enough sleep, resulting in feelings of fatigue and sluggishness. Repeatedly, this increases our stress levels. Our sages and scriptures have described good sleep at night as medicine for the body and mind. But today’s 24×7 work culture has depleted people’s night time sleep and daytime calm. If we do not sleep properly for a long time, it adversely affects our body and sometimes leads to serious illnesses.

What Is Sleep?

Sleep is an essential part of our daily routine. Throughout the day, work and numerous activities cause us stress. But after the day’s hustle, when we come home, we need peaceful and restful sleep to rejuvenate our body and mind for the next day’s tasks. We spend about one-third of our lives sleeping, which is very important for our health.

Sleep is a state of unconsciousness that occurs regularly at a specific time each day, during which we do not perceive surrounding objects.

If we look at sleep in detail, it has two types:

One is light sleep. In this type of sleep, we are physically asleep but mentally active. We see dreams in this sleep, and these dreams are somewhat memorable.

The other is deep sleep. During this type, our physical activities are minimal, meaning we sleep deeply, which provides more rest to the body and mind. Six to eight hours of sleep daily is good for physical and mental health.

If sleep is not good, the body and mind do not function as they should. Lack of sleep directly affects memory. Problems like anger, irritability, and stress become normal.

Sleeping more than required daily is also not healthy, as it causes sluggishness and laziness.

Problems Caused By Lack Of Sleep

Consistently getting insufficient sleep can cause many problems. Six to eight hours of sleep is necessary to maintain health. If we sleep less, negative effects on the body increase, and many issues can arise, such as:

  • Increased stress: Sleep directly relates to our brain. If we sleep less or poorly, it affects our mind. Less sleep causes the brain to keep thinking, which increases stress.
  • Mental disorders: Lack of sleep causes sluggishness and increases problems like anger and irritability. It also raises the risk of mental conditions such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and attention deficit issues.
  • Tiredness: When a person does not get good sleep or sound sleep, they feel tired throughout the day.
  • Memory weakness: Sleep deprivation impacts memory. It weakens recall ability. Forgetting minor things or negative thoughts is common; lack of sleep causes memory to weaken, affecting decision-making.
  • Impact on immune system: Sleep deprivation harms the immune system, reducing resistance to infections, which increases the risk of illnesses.
  • Risk of diabetes: Poor sleep affects diabetes. It raises the likelihood of developing diabetes. Even one day of insufficient sleep can impact insulin resistance. Less sleep impairs insulin’s ability to regulate blood sugar, leading to increased blood sugar levels. Prolonged sleep deprivation can reduce insulin production, increasing the chances of diabetes.
  • High blood pressure: Less sleep causes fatigue and irritability, making one less inclined to work and more prone to anger. This can lead to increased blood pressure.
  • Weight gain: Poor sleep increases unhealthy food cravings, such as fast foods, packaged foods, pizza, and burgers. Sleeping late at night also leads to snacking. These foods provide energy that the body can’t digest fully, leading to weight gain. Additionally, feeling sluggish and tired from inadequate sleep discourages physical activities like yoga or exercise, which can cause obesity and increased weight.
  • Constipation: Eating unhealthy foods and snacking frequently affects digestion, and poor sleep further impacts metabolism. Digestive processes become weak, and foods are not properly digested, increasing the risk of constipation.
  • Irregular periods: Sleep deprivation causes hormonal imbalance, which may lead to irregular periods, PCOD, and heavy bleeding. Ideally, one should get at least 8 hours of sleep during periods to reduce pain and mood swings. During sleep, cells repair themselves, but sleep deprivation lowers immunity, increasing infection risk. Women may also experience irritability and weight gain.
  • Harmful to the heart: Inadequate sleep negatively impacts heart health, increasing the risk of heart-related issues. Several studies have confirmed that sleep deprivation raises the risk of heart diseases.

Benefits Of Good Sleep

If sleep is insufficient, the likelihood of experiencing the problems mentioned above increases. Therefore, one should take measures to ensure good sleep, so as to stay physically and mentally healthy. Because there are many benefits of good sleep, which are as follows:

  • Getting complete and good sleep not only benefits the body but also the brain.
  • Good sleep maintains mental health, helping to avoid stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • It has a positive effect on memory; the ability to remember improves.
  • Sound sleep helps boost immunity; it not only increases resistance to diseases but also removes fatigue and laziness.
  • Good sleep is essential for reducing stress and calming both the body and the mind.
  • A good night’s sleep reduces the chances of developing incurable diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, etc.
  • Getting good sleep increases concentration; better focus allows us to complete our work effectively.
