In the US, women can now take contraceptive medicines or oral contraceptive pills without a doctor’s prescription.
Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration announced that this contraceptive medicine Opill can be taken by women of all ages.
Opil says that their medicines will be available at pharmacy stores in early 2024.
There are 100 countries in the world, including the US, where contraceptive medicines can be found at drug stores.
Apart from Latin America, China, Britain, India is also included in the list of these countries.
Women experts in the US say that there used to be shame or stigma among women, especially teenage girls, regarding these contraceptive medicines, but now that will go away. Along with this, it will also help in the problems they used to face in getting reproductive health services.
According to the information published on the National Library of Medicine, thousands of medicines were developed in the history of medicine, but a big change came after the development of contraceptive medicines in 1950.
According to the information written on this, this not only gave freedom to women but also gave them reproductive autonomy.
Family Planning in India
According to the information published on the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India is the first country in the world to start the National Family Planning Program in the year 1952.
After the implementation of the program, it expanded on a large scale. Under this, contraceptive medicines and condoms are also given free of cost by the government in health centers, while ASHA workers also work to deliver them to the people.
Gynecologist Dr. SN Basu says, “Contraceptive medicines are an effective method of family planning in India. If the medicines are taken in the right way, then they provide 100 percent prevention. At the same time, it gave women the freedom to decide when they want to have a child after the first one.”
Contraceptive drugs either contain both the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which is also called COC, while the other contains only progesterone, they are called POP.
Dr Pratima Mittal, a gynaecologist at Amrita Hospital in Delhi, says that earlier oral contraceptives or contraceptives used to have a high amount of estrogen, which also had side effects, but now it is in very low quantity.
Carrying forward her point, Dr Suchitra Delvi, a gynaecologist in Mumbai, says that women have both estrogen and progesterone hormones in their body and these hormones are used in contraceptives, which have different effects on the body.
Effect of contraceptives
These three doctors say that there are no major side effects of taking contraceptives, but taking COC and POP definitely has some effects on the body of women.
These doctors say that medicines which contain estrogen hormone help those women who have blood clot disease, heart disease, high blood pressure.
Women who use medicines which contain progesterone may have problems like nausea, headache, irregular menstruation and dizziness.
These doctors say that before giving these medicines, it is checked whether a woman has any disease like kidney, liver, cancer.
Doctors say that taking these contraceptive medicines can have different effects on women, the main ones of which are
Effects of these medicines on the body
- Accumulation of water in the body
- Feeling of heaviness in the body
- Risk of increased acne
- Heaviness in the breasts
- Mood swings
Dr. Pratima Mittal says that contraceptives can be taken for a long time and do not have many side effects.
Dr. Suchitra Delvi, who also openly raises issues of women’s rights, says, “If a woman smokes and is taking contraceptives that contain estrogen, it can cause blood clots, whereas if the medicine contains progesterone, it does not have any effect.”
At the same time, doctors say that there are some benefits of taking it according to the health condition of different women.
Benefits of contraceptives
- Most importantly, contraceptives can help in family planning
- Help in regulating menstruation
- Help in reducing heavy bleeding during menstruation
- Reduces the risk of ovarian cancer
Dr. Pratima Mittal says that there is a misconception that taking this medicine increases the risk of cancer, but this is not true.
Dr. Suchitra Delvi says that it does not mean that if you are taking these medicines daily, then these hormones are getting accumulated in your body, rather they get out of the body through the liver.
Dr. says that if there is unprotected intercourse, then it is advisable to take i-pill within 120 hours, which reduces the chances of pregnancy.
Progesterone is also used in i-pill and its quantity is high.
Why the burden only on women?
Experts believe that contraceptive medicines gave women the freedom to plan their family, but then its responsibility also started falling on them, which most of the women are bearing till now.
It is not that there are no contraceptive means for men.
Under the family planning program of the government, condoms are also given along with contraceptive pills, but if we look at the data, its use is less.
According to doctors, there are definitely less contraceptive means for men, which include condoms and sterilization.
But there are myths associated with both. For example, while there is a belief that condom use reduces sexual pleasure, there is a fear of sterilization causing weakness in the body, which has an adverse effect on women.
These doctors are of the opinion that although many awareness campaigns are being run by the government so that these myths can be dispelled, there has been a change in the thinking of men as well, but its percentage is very low.
