Here, we will explain in simple terms what HIV and AIDS are, how they spread, how to prevent them, and what their treatment is.

HIV And AIDS

In today’s times, awareness about health is increasing, but some diseases are such that correct information does not reach people. HIV and AIDS are such diseases, about which many misconceptions are spread. These are diseases where awareness is the key to prevention and treatment. Here, we will tell you in simple language what HIV and AIDS are, how they spread, how to stay safe from them, and what their treatment is.

What Is HIV?

The full form of HIV is Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It is a virus that weakens the body’s immune system. When this virus enters the body, it damages the white blood cells (CD4 cells), which help fight diseases.

If HIV is not treated on time, it gradually weakens the body to the point that the person develops several serious illnesses. This condition is called AIDS.

How Does HIV Spread?

HIV spreads only through certain specific ways. It does not spread through casual contact like handshakes, sitting together, or eating food. For HIV to spread, direct contact with certain body fluids of an infected person is necessary:

  • Blood
  • Semen and pre-ejaculate
  • Vaginal fluids
  • Rectal fluids
  • Breast milk

If these fluids enter the body of an HIV-negative person through cuts, mucous membranes, or injections, HIV can spread.

Common Ways HIV Spreads

  • Having sex without a condom (especially anal or vaginal sex)
  • Sharing needles or syringes, such as when using drugs or steroids
  • During pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding from mother to child

How Can HIV Spread In Very Rare Cases?

  • During oral sex, if there are mouth ulcers and semen from an HIV-positive person enters the mouth
  • Contaminated blood or organ transplants, although nowadays strict testing is done
  • If blood is drawn after an HIV-positive person bites you and the skin is broken
  • During deep kissing if both have mouth ulcers and blood comes into contact
  • Consuming chewed food by an HIV-positive person, observed only in infants

How Does AIDS Occur?

AIDS means Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. It is the final and most severe stage of HIV infection. If an HIV-positive person does not take medication, the virus completely destroys the body’s immune system, leading to serious illnesses.

Can HIV Medicine Prevent HIV From Spreading?

Yes, the medicine for HIV, called ART (Antiretroviral Therapy), if taken regularly, reduces the amount of HIV in the blood to such an extent that it becomes undetectable. Such individuals can live healthy lives and do not spread HIV through sex. However, this requires daily medication and regular check-ups.

How To Prevent HIV?

  • PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis): A medicine for HIV-negative individuals that prevents the virus from establishing itself in the body
  • PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis): If there is a suspicion of HIV exposure, taking medicine within 72 hours is essential
  • Use condoms correctly
  • Do not share needles or syringes
  • Get regular HIV tests

Having correct information about HIV and AIDS is very important. This disease does not spread through touching or staying together but only through specific ways. Early treatment and precautions can prevent HIV, and even an HIV-positive person can lead a healthy life.
