Vodafone-Idea Sought Help From The Government: May Get Relief Of ₹ 52 Thousand Crores, Not Able To Pay AGR-Spectrum Dues

Telecom company Vodafone-Idea (VI), which is facing various typs of financial difficulties, is facing a lot of difficulties in paying Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) and spectrum dues. In such a situation, the company has requested the government for additional financial support. According to some media reports, the company has sent a letter to Telecom Secretary Neeraj Mittal on March 11 regarding this. The company has requested the government to convert a large part of its outstanding dues into equity. If this happens, the government’s stake in Vodafone-Idea can increase to 49%, which is currently 22.6%.

The company sought assistance under the 2021 telecom relief package

According to the report, Vodafone-Idea is seeking relief for AGR and spectrum dues of Rs 36,950 crore. This also includes immediate payment of Rs 13,089 crore in the coming weeks. VI, which is facing financial difficulties, has indicated that it does not have the capacity to meet these payments. Vodafone Idea has sought assistance under the 2021 telecom relief package. No statement has come from the company in this matter so far.

VI can get relief of Rs 52 thousand crore

Vodafone-Idea has made the request at a time when according to media reports, the government has refused to give any relief to telecom companies in AGR dues. If the government accepts the company’s request, analysts estimate that VI can get relief of Rs 52 thousand crore, which will reduce its outstanding AGR liability by about 75% and reduce 25% of the total debt.

The Supreme Court rejected the company’s petition in September 2024

Vodafone Idea had filed a curative petition in the Supreme Court in July 2024 last year challenging the calculation of AGR dues. In which non-core revenue was also included and the company was against it. However, in September 2024, the Supreme Court rejected the petition of the telecom operator.

Vodafone-Idea suffered a loss of ₹ 6,609 crore in the third quarter

Vodafone-Idea has suffered a loss (consolidated net loss) of Rs 6,609 crore in the third quarter of FY 2024-25. The company had a loss of Rs 6,986 crore in the same quarter a year ago. The company’s loss has reduced by 5.40% on an annual basis. Vodafone-Idea’s consolidated operational revenue grew 4.16% year-on-year to Rs 11,117 crore in the October-December quarter. The company’s revenue was Rs 10,673 crore in the same quarter a year ago i.e. Q3FY24. The amount received from selling goods and services is called revenue.

Vodafone-Idea’s ‘Average Revenue per User’ (ARPU) grew 4.7% to Rs 173 during the October-December quarter. It was Rs 166 in the previous quarter i.e. July-September. This change is due to tariff hike and users buying expensive packs.
