Use Of Antibiotics Indiscriminately, India Is Getting Caught In Dangerous Condition

In Maharashtra’s 1,000-armed non-profit Kasturba Hospital, doctors are struggling with antibiotic-resistant “superbug infections”.

This happens when bacteria change over time and become resistant to drugs that are effective in defeating them and fixing the infection caused by them.

According to the Medical Journal, ‘The Lancet’, in 2019, with such resistance, 12 lakh 70 thousand deaths occurred directly around the world. Antibiotics, who are considered the first row of protection against severe infections, did not work in most of these cases.

India is one of those countries which suffer the worst from ‘antimicrobial resistance’. Every year about 60,000 newborns cause deaths. A new government report presents a shocking picture of how things are getting worse.

Which antibiotic will be most effective in dealing with five main microbes (pathogen), tests conducted at Kasturba Hospital to find out have found that many major drugs have not been effective in dealing with microbes.

These paths include E. Koli (Eschherichia coli), which are usually found in the intestines of humans and animals after consuming contaminated food.

These include Clabsialla pneumonia, which can cause pneumonia by infecting the lungs, and can cause meningitis by cutting the blood, skin and brain lining. In addition, deadly staphylococcus aureus which is a meal produced bacteria and can be spread through air drops or aerosols.

How much threat from indiscriminate use

Doctors found that some main antibiotics were less than 15% effective in treating these germs infections. The most concern was from a multidrig resistant pathogen called Acinetobacter Bomani, which attacks the lungs of patients in critical care units.

A new report by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) states that the resistance to very powerful antibiotics is called carbapenum, defeating many paths.

In the last one year, there has been a 10 percent increase in carbapenum.

This report of ICMR collects data on antibiotic resistance from 30 public and private hospitals every year.

The ICMR report states that things are so worrisome that only 43% of pneumonia infections caused by a pathogen in India can be treated in 2021 from the first line of antibiotics, which was 65% in 2016.

No more option for treatment of patients

Critical Care Specialist Saswati Sinha at AMRI Hospital in Kolkata says that the situation is so bad that “six out of ten” patients in his ICU have drug -resistant infections. “We have come on a stage where you do not have much options left for some of these patients.”

Doctors at Kasturba Hospital say that resistance to antibiotics is also widespread among outside patients in villages and small cities.

Most people do not have special knowledge of their old treatment and medicine, so it is difficult for doctors to get the previous records of their antibiotics.

Doctor Kalanti says, “It is a challenge to see such patients and more and more antibiotics will only spoil the situation.”

Despite this, the antibiotics of all these problems which should be used only for very serious illness are about 75 percent of their use or use suggestions.

The doctor says, “Doctors cannot be considered responsible for this completely. There is such a crowd of patients in hospitals that doctors have less time for treatment.

Lack of information about these medicines in villages or cities is also a reason for the increase in their use. Educated or rich people also use antibiotics when they fall ill.

Dr. Walia says, “In today’s time, the fall in antibiotics and medical tests are also a reason. Because doctors are often not in a very clear condition about their patient’s disease, they use antibiotics that work on large parts of the body.”

Due to lack of cleanliness in hospitals, doctors also provide antibiotic medicines for the treatment of patients who are infected. “Because no doctor wants to lose his patient only because of infection”

Ramanan Laxminarayanan, director of the One Health Trust, says, “These are a serious problem for India because there are many diseases caused by infection, due to which antibiotic is consumed without any reason.

Experts believe that India needs to focus on its medical test labs. Specialist doctors of infection in India should be more and more, focus on cleanliness in hospitals and doctors should emphasize the right training for the use of antibiotics.

Dr. Walia says that if there is any negligence in these works, then the problem of antibiotic resistance can also become an epidemic.
