OpenAI has shared shocking data: Millions are discussing mental health issues with ChatGPT, including signs of suicidal intent.
OpenAI revealed that millions of ChatGPT users are struggling with serious mental health issues and discussing them with the AI chatbot. The report states that each week, millions of people show signs of suicidal plans or intentions in their conversations with ChatGPT. Some evidences represents 0.15% of ChatGPT’s 800 million weekly active users. Furthermore, a significant number of users feel emotionally attached to ChatGPT, which may indicate psychopathology or mania.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT has been trained with advice from over 170 mental health experts to better respond to mental health issues. The newer version of ChatGPT provides better responses to these issues compared to older versions. For example, when evaluating conversations related to suicide, ChatGPT 5 provides responses that align with the company’s desired responses in 91% of cases, whereas the previous model only achieved this in 77% of cases. OpenAI claims to maintain safety even in long conversations.
Currently, OpenAI is facing a lawsuit from the parents of a 16-year-old boy who shared his thoughts with ChatGPT before committing suicide. Additionally, the state attorneys general of California and Delaware have warned OpenAI to protect users of its products. Consequently, OpenAI has introduced more parental control features in the app. Moreover, ChatGPT is developing a system to detect if a minor is communicating with it and automatically apply safety measures.
Recent studies suggest that chatbots can negatively impact users struggling with mental health issues. Researchers found that AI chatbots can cause some users to become trapped in delusional thoughts. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claims that the company is making ChatGPT capable of mitigating serious mental health issues. However, experts are concerned that OpenAI only makes these safety features available to those using the paid version of ChatGPT.
