Police is an organization of the government, which has to work promptly to maintain law and order in the country, protect the property of the government and the public, and prevent the spread of chaos and anarchy among the citizens by using force as per the need. In fact, the concept of police is thousands of years old in a global perspective. With time, there have been many changes in the organizational form of police in every country of the world, but basically it has existed as the central institution of the state that enforces law in the country.
To maintain peace and law and order, the police has to work among the public as the first representative of the government. Maintaining peace and law and order in the society, preventing crimes, investigating crimes and punishing criminals under the law, stopping illegal activities and protecting all types of government and private property have been the traditional and main roles of the police. In other words, police is the most responsible and important part of the government and society. After all, the police is the messenger of the government who is in front of the public on the ground. Police personnel are those representatives of the government, who make the public realize that the law exists and also tell what the public should and should not do within the ambit of the law.
Even today, police is the first medium through which victims of crimes present their complaints before the law. From this point of view, the police is the most important link in the work of the department, because if anarchy, unrest or public anger spreads in the city itself, then the work there is left far behind. In this era of information and communication technology, there has been unlimited expansion in the scope of police work, due to which there is undoubtedly a need to see and understand the traditional role of police in a changed form.
In this era of information and communication technology, seeing the ever-increasing cases of cyber crime amidst the hustle and bustle of public life, one remembers a unique experience some 30-35 years from now. It was the era when watchmen were deployed for night-watchman patrolling of streets and localities and used to patrol two-three respectable streets all night by blowing loud whistles or reprimanding sticks. Not only this, he also often kept repeating in a loud voice – ‘Stay awake, stay awake’. Isn’t it a strange thing, who wakes up homeless at night! But the real thing is that in those times, amidst these harsh sounds of whistles, sticks and loud calls, people used to stay awake the whole night and even sleep without any worries while sitting. Actually, these voices of the watchman were a message of peace for him, because he felt that someone was awake to protect him. They also knew that there were strong locks in their house and Munderi and the watchman was guarding outside and now what would the point of a thief or a criminal attacking their house.
In today’s times the circumstances are completely opposite. The locks here are also strong, as watchmen the government, security agencies, police, banking institutions and many international and social organizations are repeatedly alerting people about cyber crimes, but despite this, cases of cyber fraud and cyber crimes are increasing. Are increasing every day. The reason is that now even if the lockdown of houses and mundaries is a thousand times stronger, security personnel or guards are deployed outside, people consider themselves safe in the society But information and communication technology has made armed criminals so powerful that they take advantage of a small mistake and in the blink of an eye, they are either elected worth lakhs or hurt personal and social respect. Cyber crimes cause harm to people not only in terms of money but also mental and self-esteem. Meaning: While the carelessness of old times used to give solace, the slightest carelessness of today’s times proves to be a big mistake despite a thousand security arrangements. This is the biggest loss of this digital world and people have to understand this fact, only then the society can be saved against cyber crimes.
In this era of information and communication revolution, public ignorance, indifference and carelessness clearly prove to be the biggest residence for cyber criminals. The main reason for this is that in cyber crime cases, the role of police often starts when the crime is exposed, because before that everything goes on online between the criminal and the victim. In fact, cyber criminals take the most advantage of the innocence and ignorance of the public.
In this era of computers, internet and smart phones, we all always struggle with cyber security. Every work of ours is now done through these resources. Be it booking train tickets, paying phone or mobile bills, booking cinema online, ordering food, we handle even the smallest tasks with our computer or smart phone/mobile phone. These devices are used for entertainment. Our Joshili also lives on various social media applications available on these devices. Not only is the work completely dependent on the internet, now education is also being done online and banking transactions and buying and selling are also being done through these platforms. The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically increased the use of electronic communications, digital transactions, and social media. That means now social, educational, economic and all other activities have completely come on a platform on the Internet, where no one can openly claim to be safe. The reason for this is that hackers and cyber criminals, using all their knowledge and experience, are always waiting to know who should be targeted, when and how? There is no doubt that most of us learn to use electronic and digital security and various social media applications and devices, but never pay attention to the potential harms caused by them, nor to the precautions of use. Understand and adopt better. The result of its zeal or ignorance is that cyber crimes are increasing year after year.
It is clear that economic fraud and identity and data theft are not the only matter of concern, serious cyber crimes are also happening against women, children and people from different sections of the society in the cyber world. In such a situation, if the public is not aware of cyber crimes and their changing nature, then the loss in cyber crime cases will definitely increase. Police will continue to investigate, cyber criminals will continue to commit crimes and people will continue to become victims of their vicious tactics.
