Answer- Deepfake is an artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can be used to create a complete replica of someone’s face, gestures, voice, or way of speaking. Through this, a person’s video or image can be modified in such a way that it appears to be real, while it is far away or fake. This can be conducted in all 3 forms – video, audio and image.

Question-2: How risky is deepfake?

Answer- This AI method can be very risky due to the fact that the appearance of those faux movies and pictures is so real that it turns them into hard to pick up. It can break a person’s image, reveal fake information and they can be deceiving. It is a big threat to private life, society, and politics.

Question-3: How are deepfake movies or pics made?

Answer- Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are used at the edge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning to make deepfake movies and pics. There are some steps on it. Such as-

First, someone’s pics, videos, and voice samples are collected from the internet or social media.

The AI ​​version (incorporating GANS) learns the nuances of that person’s face, gestures, and voice. Here are the major parts of it. The generator which creates the fake pics or videos and the discriminator which tests whether it is real or fake. The difference between the versions is then further corrected through the evaluation.

Encoder and Decoder

The encoder extracts important features from the real face.

The decoder makes those features fake with the help of using them for another video or image.

Answer- Cybersecurity and AI regulation professional Dr. Pawan Dugal explains that currently there may be no exact regulation for AI-generated faux movies, pics or audios like Deepfakes in India, however several current legal guidelines and sections can be used in such cases. These legal guidelines cover topics like virtual harassment, violation of privacy, spreading faux statistics and cyber crimes towards women. Major legal guidelines coping with Deepfakes in India:

  • IT Act, 2000
  • Section 66d- Fraud by the aid of using false identity.
  • Section 66e- Violation of privacy (involving taking image/video of a person with permission).
  • Section sixty seven and 67a- Spreading pornographic or sexually explicit content material in digital form.
  • In India, the IT Act, BNS and IT Rules 2021 are used at the same time for crimes associated with Deepfakes. There is a call to convey a different strict regulation for Deepfakes with the future.

Answer-

  • In cases involving women, call the women helpline 1091 or 181.
  • Complaints can also be lodged on the website of the National Commission for Women (NCW).
