Here are some of the most common types of scams you should be aware of. You can find out more about each of these types of scams on the Scamwatch website, including warning signs and steps to protect you.
1. Impersonation scams
Scammers deceive you into believing that they are on behalf of trusted organizations, such as the police, government, banks, and well-known businesses. They may also pretend to be your friends or family members. Scammers search for information about you by sending phishing emails or messages. These are created to steal your information. They try to convince you to give their personal information by pretending to be on behalf of an official organization or someone you know or trust. Scammers use technology to pretend their calls or messages are from legitimate phone numbers. They can display text messages only in a discussion series of actual messages from an organization.
2. Investment scams
Scammers make their investment proposal look so good using reliable marketing and new technology that you feel you don’t miss it. They promise you large dividends, low or free from danger. They often use pressure tactics to get you to step up early, so they can stab your money.
3. Job and employment scams
Scammers propose jobs that pay well with little effort. They pretend to recruit on behalf of high-profile companies and online shopping platforms. Sometimes their listed jobs are not real at all. Scammers also impersonate well-known recruitment agencies. Their goal is to steal your money and personal information. They may ask you to prepay the money, so you are able to work for them.
4. Products and Services Scams
Scammers impersonate being a buyer or seller to steal your money. They offer such good prices for products or services by creating fake websites or profiles on legitimate retailer sites that they are hard to believe. They post fake ads and fake reviews. They may use a stolen logo, a.com.au domain name, and a stolen Australian Business Number (ABN). These scams are difficult to detect. Scammers also impersonate you for being a familiar and trustworthy business to send you fake bills. They can also change the details in the actual invoices, so that the customer pays the scammer instead of you.
5. Scams of love (romance)
Scammers use promises of love, dating, or friendship to steal your money. They go deep enough to show that the relationship is real and trick you into giving them money. Scammers find you on social media, dating or gaming apps and websites. They may also send you text or email. They sometimes hide behind fake profiles and identities of famous people, among others. Once you trust them, they pretend they are in an ’emergency’ and ask for your help. This will often be a request for money or other products.
6. Threats and extortion scams
Scammers pretend to be on behalf of a trusted organization and claim that you need to pay money, otherwise something bad will happen. If you do not agree to pay them immediately, they may threaten you with arrest, deportation, or even physical harm. They can also blackmail you by threatening to share nude photos or videos you send unless you send them money.
7. Unexpected money scams
Scammers try to convince you that you owe money or deserve money or winnings that you didn’t expect to get. Scammers ask you to pay a fee or provide your banking or identity details before you can collect the money or winnings. Unfortunately no money is available for free.
