Lessons, Resolutions, These 10 Tips From Cyber Crime, Which Will Protect You From Cyber Fraud

New cyber fraud and AI-backed anti-fraud techniques increased security challenges in 2024. Not sharing OTP, avoiding unintended video calls and job fishing borders, reporting to digital arrest accused, and carefully checking customer care numbers, these steps are important for 2025.

Cybercrime reached the next level in 2024 after AI gained momentum. The new trend of cyber fraud was common. It would be better to see the ‘lessons’ received from the year 2024 as ‘resolutions’ in 2025. NBT is telling 10 tips, which will protect you from cyber fraud.

1. OTP will not share

You will never share OTP on unknown calls or messages. The result will be that you will be able to save your bank account, mobile, laptop from being hacked. Also, cyber scams will survive many other threats. OTP ie One Time Password is a safety feature sent to login to an account, website or app or to verify an important transaction. It should never be shared with anyone else, as it may endanger your online security. If someone asks for an unknown OTP from you, do not share it at all, as it is a danger alarm. Use the authentication app (such as Google Authenticator), which gives OTP as well as additional security layers. Keep an eye on your transactions and log-in activity through notifications and official websites / apps.

2. Do not receive video call from unknown number

Lessons have been received from several cyber incidents of sextortion in 2024 to avoid messages, audio and video calls coming from unknown numbers. It is threatened with offensive photos, videos or information. Money is demanded. If not completed, photographs / videos are threatened with viral. The caller has to block immediately. However, if it bothers, the police must report it. Many apps like Truecaller help identify unknown collars. Give the option to block calls to avoid spam or unwanted calls. DND (Do Not Disturb) mode can be activated. Audio / video calls are not to be raised manually. Most scammers and spammers adopt this method. You can reject that call or send it to voicemail. There is also a risk of data transfer with the video in a video call from an unknown.

3. Not stuck in the fork of ‘job fishing’

Email spoofing means creating an Email ID in a format similar to a large company’s email. Cyber criminals steal employment details from social media LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram etc. A fake email ID that looks like real comes from a job offer. Tests also occur. Then a fake offer letter is also sent. Till then many of your personal information like address, past employment, account statement etc. is taken during this entire process. Some minor money is deposited online in the name of registration fees. The link given to him is a Malware link that captures all banking details and passwords while making payments. So do not click on the unknown link from any email or message. Log in with your user ID and password only on the authorized website. Checking before website address is https://, http:// no. If you are getting a lot more salary offers than your qualification.

4. Nothing like digital arrest

There is no thing called ‘digital arrest’ in Indian law. This is the method of cyber fraud. In this, fraudsters falsely claim to arrest the phone (or from online communication) by becoming police / intelligence officers. The motive is to convince the victim that he is involved in a crime and eventually makes a large amount of money from him. This year ‘digital arrest’ led to virtual ransom recovery of crores from many. Do not be afraid if you get such calls. Block the numbers from which CBI, ED, police notices have been sent. Fraudsters can say that your names have come in couriers, packets have received drugs or your phone has interacted with terrorists… There are many such tricks. Do not be afraid under any circumstances. No information is to be given like family, property, job, business, bank, credit card.

5. Electricity / gas connection will not be cut tonight

‘Impower / gas will cut such connection tonight due to lack of bill update… This year such messages cyber fraudbed people. Stop now that the message will ignite. Ignore the gas connection message just like the SMS of the electricity company. Will not click on the given link or attachment. Will confirm by calling the helpline number of your PNG bill. BP (Business Partner) number written on its gas bill will check on the website. Will not download links to AnyDesk and TeamViewer at the behest of the unknown. Customers will call the care number and find out. Will likewise call the helpline number for your electricity bill. Will check on the website from the CA (Contract Account) number written on the electricity bill. There is no panic when the message comes.

6. Voice cloning from AI to voice

With the help of AI, anyone’s voice can be copied. It uses a special software. Therefore, it is extremely important to be careful with voice cloning. The biggest danger of voice cloning is that fraudulent people can fraud by mimicking someone’s voice. For example, if the voice of a senior officer of a company is copied, cyber criminals can do anything. In some cases voice cloning can be used to bypass security systems. For example, voice biometric is used in some banks or companies, and if someone mimics your voice, it can access your account. In such a situation, whenever you talk to an unknown caller on the phone, always be cautious.

7. Social media profiles are not ‘public’

Making information public on social media can give cyber criminals a chance. Therefore avoid sharing sensitive information in social media. Never provide your date of birth, address, phone number, or bank account information on social media. Criminals can use these information to steal your identity. The setting of social media profiles should be such that only close friends can see your information. Take care that your social media profile is not public (public) that anyone can see it. There is not much information to be given in the profile even while applying for marriage relationship and job. Cyber criminals can use personal information and use it.

8. Avoid ‘customer care’ search on Google

Care to search for ‘customer care’ or anyone else’s number on Google, as the numbers seen on the top link of this search engine may be cyber thugs. Never search for bank, company helpline / customer care number on Lisa Google search. Search on the website of the company concerned instead. The URL of any bank / company website is to be thoroughly checked. In the Hubhu website, there is a difference of micro levels like non-visible dot, dash, slash, under score. The company has to watch the spelling at the address bar. At the bottom of the website page you can see options like Contact Us Helpline or Support. If you search for a number on Google and it is in a public database, spam calls / messages can come from that number.

9. Trading Investment Offer ‘no no

Many groups or advertisements are seen on social media apps (WhattsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram), which easily claim to make money from the stock market. Many people join them by watching these advertisements. Cyber Criminals then target people through fake apps to cheat people. The spreading spider of the trading scam is woven with the help of AI. They bluff – learn investment skills for free. Zero loss scheme and 100% return guarantee. Claims the class of registered advisor by becoming a share advisor or from SEBI / RBI. But they do not come under the guide. Do not download APK app. Personal or financial information is not to be shared.
