In today’s digital age, gadgets like mobile phones, tablets and laptops have become an important part of children’s lives. From studies to entertainment, children spend hours on these devices. Although these gadgets make our work easier, their excessive use can pose a serious threat to children’s eyes and overall health. The increasing habit of screen time is rapidly increasing eye problems in children. Especially diseases like myopia (near vision loss) and digital eye strain are taking birth. Let us know how dangerous these gadgets are for children’s eyes and what things parents should keep in mind.

What Effect Does Watching Mobile Have On Children’s Eyes?

  1. Eye fatigue and dryness – Children’s eyes get tired after watching the screen for a long time. Children blink less while focusing on the screen which reduces moisture in the eyes. This may cause eye irritation, dryness and sometimes pain. It is also called digital eye strain.
  2. Risk of myopia – Excessive screen time at a young age can cause myopia in children in which distant objects appear blurry. Prolonged meditation on a small mobile screen puts pressure on the eye muscles which can weaken vision. Many researches show that cases of myopia are increasing rapidly in children and a major reason for this is the excessive use of gadgets.
  3. Disadvantages of Blue Light – Blue light emitted from mobile and tablet screens is harmful for the eyes. It can damage the retina and prolonged exposure can lead to increased vision problems. Use of mobile at night also affects sleep as blue light keeps the mind active and spoils the sleep cycle.
  4. Need of glasses at a young age – Due to excessive use of gadgets, even small children are needing glasses. Bright screen light and constant focus on it can weaken eyesight, which can lead to vision loss at an early age.

Other Disadvantages Of Mobile Gadgets

  1. Decrease in concentration – Excessive screen time affects children’s concentration and learning ability. They get bored quickly and are unable to concentrate on studies.
  2. Decrease in physical activities – Due to mobile addiction, children shy away from playing outside or taking part in physical activities, which affects their physical development.
  3. Sleep problems – Use of mobile at night spoils the quality of sleep due to which children remain tired and irritable in the morning.

How To Protect Baby’s Eyes From Mobile Screen?

  1. Important tips for parents – Parents can adopt the measures mentioned below to keep their children’s eyes safe and protect them from the harm of gadgets.
  2. Limit screen time – Children’s screen time should not exceed 1-2 hours per day. Keep young children (under 2 years) completely away from mobile or tablet. Schedule time for studies and sports after school so that the use of gadgets is less.
  3. Adopt the 20-20-20 rule – Every 20 minutes ask children to take a 20-second break in which they look at something 20 metres away. This provides relief to the eyes and reduces fatigue.
  4. Take care of the correct distance and illumination – There should be a distance of at least 25-30 centimeters between the mobile and the eyes. Reduce screen brightness and do not allow mobile use in the dark. There should be enough light in the room so that there is no strain on the eyes.
  5. Use of Blue Light Filter – Turn on Blue Light Filter settings in mobile. If the child uses the screen for a long time then blue light blocking glasses can also be used.
  6. Encourage play outside – Motivate children to play outside for at least 1-2 hours daily or spend time in nature. This keeps their eyes healthy and reduces the risk of myopia.
  7. Regular eye exams – Get children’s eyes checked every 6-12 months especially if they use gadgets regularly. Problems can be caught and fixed in time with early investigation.
  8. Create gadget-free time – Keep a few hours at home when no one uses gadgets. Stop using mobile completely at the dinner table or before sleeping.
