How Can We Get Rid Of The Habit Of Looking At Mobile Phone Repeatedly

What if your mobile phone is in perfect condition and you have time, but you are not using the phone? Initially you may not understand what to do, but if you get such an opportunity, you should take time for yourself and complete those tasks which have been postponed for a long time. Like reading a book, completing an unfinished painting or talking to family. This is called digital detox.

Digital detox is done so that we can again understand the importance of those things, which were once an important part of human life and development. With time, we have become so dependent on digital devices that now we need apps to keep them away. This is the reason why digital detox apps are being discussed now. Let us know how these apps work and what we should do for digital detox.

What are digital detox apps?

Dozens of digital detox apps for iPhones and Android phones are available in the App Store. These are special apps that help reduce screen time and reduce dependence on digital devices. That is, their purpose is to remove you from the phone screen and connect you to real life. On the Google Play Store, it is written about the digital detox app, “Reduce your friendship with your phone so that you can reconnect with yourself, others and the world.”

It is also written, “Are you always on your phone? Do you fear being cut off from the world? Do you panic when you don’t get network? If so, then it’s time for detox.” These apps basically turn off the phone for a fixed time. This time can be from 10 minutes to 10 days, a month or even more. You can decide for yourself how long you want to keep the phone off.

During this time, all social media apps remain closed and only emergency call facility is available. Some apps allow phone calls and some even put a time limit on calls. However, it’s important to be careful when choosing a digital detox app.

How do digital detox apps work?

As we mentioned, these apps shut down your mobile phone for a fixed time. But some apps also allow you to choose which social media apps to shut down and which not. I have experienced this myself. One day on a holiday, I thought why not take a break from the phone for some time. With the help of an app, I put my phone on detox mode for about three hours. However, as per my habit, I did pick up the phone once or twice during this time. During this time, some interesting messages appeared on the screen as advice, such as –

  • You can go for a walk.
  • You can cook your favorite food.
  • You can spend time sitting with family and drinking tea.
  • You can do gardening.

Many such messages kept coming on the screen, so I put the phone down. To be honest, these three hours proved to be the most meaningful hours of the day. My mind and brain got some rest and I felt relaxed. In fact, digital detox apps limit phone use to only the most important tasks.

Why is digital detox needed?

According to a report in the English newspaper The Hindu, 86 percent of adults in India have smartphones and 30 percent of them spend about six hours on the screen every day. Whether it is to stay connected with friends, or social media or for entertainment on YouTube or gaming sites. According to a 2024 report by RedSeer Strategy, the average screen time in India is 7.3 hours.

Experts consider such a high screen time to be dangerous for both physical and mental health. Family psychologist Jasleen Gill says, “We have isolated ourselves even while staying in our own home with our family.” She says, “Human nature is not to live alone, but to live in society. Society also started with the tendency of living together. Unnecessary screen time is limiting us. We have started preferring to spend time on the phone instead of talking to our loved ones.”

Jasleen says, “Many brain-related diseases are related to loneliness. When you do not share your sorrows or problems with anyone and depend on things like AI for help in such matters, the situation turns into mental illness.” She says that human development is related to mutual conversation, exchange of experiences and ideas, which has now reduced a lot. Jasleen talks about a healthy mind and a healthy body.

She says, “The human brain is so powerful that it can make a healthy person sick. And if someone is sick, then with his self-power he can move towards becoming healthy.” “But if loneliness continues for a long time, the day is not far when people will fall prey to physical diseases along with mental diseases.”

Experience of digital detox

When school teacher Amarjit Kaur was spending her holidays in June this year, she realized that on normal days she gets so many phone calls from school, children and their parents that she is not able to spend much time with her children. She thought that she would spend the entire vacation with her children. One of her children studies in class 6 and the other in class 10.

But two weeks passed and still she could not spend time with the children, because the children were busy with mobile phones. Amarjit herself used to spend most of the day sometimes on social media, sometimes talking to a relative or friend on the phone. After this, she tried to reduce the use of the phone. She says that this was a difficult task, because her attention would repeatedly go towards the phone.

Amarjeet says, “Even if there was no need to check anything in particular, I would still check WhatsApp every now and then.” Finally, on the advice of a friend, she took the help of a digital detox app. She says, “I had never heard of such an app. I switched off my phone for only two hours on the first day. I asked my children to do the same. They agreed.”

Amarjeet Kaur says, “After this, during the holidays, I kept my phone off for about eight hours. This gave me more time and peace of mind. We spent the rest of the holidays together. I spent time with my children and understood them better.” She says that now digital detox has become a part of her life.

On this matter, Jasleen Gill says that digital detox becomes even more important for those children who are preparing for school and competitive exams. Jasleen says, “Students can focus more by keeping distance from the screen. This can help them avoid procrastination and also reduce mental stress.” Jasleen says that without a phone, many of our important works can come to a halt, but we should not forget our human habits and needs.
