Do We Have Enough Electricity To Run AI

If you touch the lower part of your laptop, then there is a possibility that you will find that part warm.

From displaying emails to making spreadsheets and running many apps, laptops have to do millions of calculations, which contain energy i.e. energy.

This is the reason that when you work for a long time, the laptop battery is discharged quickly. Now imagine millions of computers from all over the world who are not making spreadsheets but are making Elgorithm for Artificial Intelligence ie (AI).

With the help of this AI, those medicines can be made, which can cure all types of cancer. It can help prevent the rising temperature of the Earth. Not only this, but many such things that humans do not want to do will be able to do machines with the help of AI.

But to develop millions of computers to develop AI and to keep them cool will be a huge amount of energy for the necessary air conditioning?

So this week in the world, we will try to know whether we have enough electricity to run AI?

AI changes the world

Artificial intelligence or AI are the state -of -the -art or super -end computer programs that can process a large amount of data.

That is, they can do more complicated work than the normal computer program and their data processing ability is more than the capacity of the human brain, due to which they are succeeding in finding solutions to many problems.

We talked to Dr. Mark Van Raymenam about the possibilities related to AI, who are Strategic Futureists in Sydney. That is, the doctor marks and assess what kind of technology can develop in future.

He says that the effect of Artificial Intelligence or AI in health services is being seen from now.

Doctor Mark said, “Google has created an AI program named Made Gemini, which doctors use as their assistant while examining the patient.”

“Alpha fold ‘of deep mind is an AI program that finds out how protein is working in the body. Its use does not only help in treating diseases but also helps in avoiding those diseases.”

AI is creating new possibilities in the medical world

The Artificial Intelligence Program of Deep Mind ‘Alpha Fold’ is exposing many possibilities in the medical world. AI can also help us to deal with the world’s biggest problem i.e. the rising temperature of the earth.

Mark Van Raymenam says that AI is now helping us control climate change. We now have such programs with the help of which we can find out where natural disasters will come. Now the change in the weather can be accurately estimated.

According to Mark, “AI can already alert us to avoid natural disaster. Many examples of this are in front of us. If we look at the future, AI can be used with quantum computers, which can help in controlling the serious consequences of climate change.”

Mark Van Raymenam says that later we can also create artificial super intelligence which can change the life of every human being in the world.

Mark Van Raymanm said that the artificial super intelligence will be faster and capable than the entire human being. This possibility is as scary as it is as interesting.

Mark believes that this will solve the world’s complicated problems. With the help of AI, nuclear fusion is helping to improve and improve solar panels.

In the future, when super artificial intelligence will develop, then we may be successful in making energy from things that are currently impossible.

It seems strange to hear, but if we make more intelligent things than humans, then anything will be possible. Due to super artificial intelligence, everything can be available in such abundance that all the problems of the world can be eliminated.

AI needs energy

Research professor at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, studies the growing effect of AI on Earth. She says that now the presence of AI in our daily life is seen in many places.

From Fes Detection to Spam Email to unlock the phone, with the help of AI. With the help of this, programs translating languages are made.

But the issue is that there is a huge amount of electricity spend in running and running computers that make and operate AI program. There is an estimate that by 2027, AI alone will start using as much electricity as a country is as big as the Netherlands.

According to Professor Kate Cropard, “A large number of machines and computers are required to develop or use AIs that do millions of calculations using Elgorithm.”

“There has been a huge increase in the construction of these facilities in the last two to three years. For this work there is a huge data center which has hundreds of big computers. These buildings of large warehouses do not have windows. They also have to keep them cool.”

There are nine to twelve thousand data centers in the world. Here powerful super computers are used to run AI, which also produces a lot of heat.

Kate Crawford says that usually the data centers are made close to water sources such as river or pond to ensure sufficient amount of water supply to keep them cool.

But a large amount of electricity is required to pump water and run computers.

New AI models will use more energy than before

According to Kate Craofford, according to some estimates, AI is using eight to ten percent of the world’s electricity budget, which is very high.

Further, the need for electricity for AI will increase further, when the use of generative AI will increase. Generative AI is the Artificial Intelligence that can chat with us, create photos and also create music with the help of sample music.

At a 2024 World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, SAM Altman, head of the chat GPT maker Open AI, said that the new models of AI will use more energy than the first estimated estimates.

According to Kate Cropard, AI is moving towards an energy crisis. Generative AI will use more power. She says that there is already a supply pressure on our power generation plants, which will increase further.

If this problem is not solved and new sources of energy are not made, then the problem can be serious.

Can Green Energy require electricity for AI

The world is already struggling with the crisis of climate change due to carbon emissions, so it would be better that electricity is required to run AI with solar energy or other renewable or green energy, but it is not enough.

Kate Crawford says that at present, the lack of electricity to run AI is being completed from the power prepared from traditional sources.

The use of nuclear power and thermal energy is also being discussed to meet the power needs of the technology industry. Even setting up a nuclear plant near large data centers is being thought.

Kate Crawford further said that keeping in mind climate change, this industry should think more morally.

The use of electricity is being seen by linking people’s standard of living

Sam Young, AI Manager of Energy Systems Catapult, a UK -based advisory company, says that the use of electricity can also be seen by linking it to the lives of people in countries.

They say that as in many countries, the standard of living of people is increasing, especially in less developed countries, there is also increasing demand for electricity. That is, not only AI but due to all of us, the demand for electricity is increasing.

Sam Young says, “People’s need for electricity is increasing in the countries of South East Asia because now more people are using air conditioning, so those countries have to increase their power generation capacity.”

The use of electricity has now increased three times more than the 1980s. But we are able to fulfill this need. In principle, the need of electricity of the whole world can be fulfilled, but it is not so easy.

Sam Young says that electricity generation is not the same worldwide. Usually every country has its own powergrid, but the powergrids of the countries of Europe are connected to each other.

That is, hydro power electricity in Sweden can be supplied to Italy and other European countries through wire. But this is not the case in other parts of the world.

The countries have their own powergrids, but in many countries, they are not able to provide adequate electricity properly to all parts of the country.

Increased electricity demand due to increasing standard of living

In many countries, the demand for electricity has increased due to increasing standard of living of people, but at the same time the demand for electricity to run AI has also increased.

Sam Young says that as AI models will develop more, they will be more powerful.

But the second reason is that people will start using AI more, which will increase the demand for electricity to run them. In some countries, already the data centers are using a large part of the total electricity of the country.

Sam Young said, “Its best example is Ireland where 30 percent of the total electricity of the country only uses data centers.”

“But this electricity is not only used in AI, but we also use it in video and music stream and cloud computing. The use of electricity can increase even more than fifty percent in the coming years.”

Some other countries can also step into the energy industry to meet the increasing demand for electricity. Sam Young says, “Many countries of Africa will have a good chance to meet the demand for renewable energy like solar energy but they will have to invest in the power supply system.”

Rise of Africa

It seems contradictory to hear, but if the African countries are able to attract more data centers, then they will be able to supply more electricity to their people as well.

Rose Mutiso, a research director of the think for the think for growth hub, says that at present, Africa is far behind in this area.

According to Rose Mutiso, “Currently, Africa’s data center capacity is only one percent of the world’s total capacity. All the data centers are only in Mumbai.”

“Most of them are in Data Centers South Africa. Data centers of big companies like Amazon, Google and Microsoft are in South Africa.”

“There are some data centers in Nigeria as well. The establishment of data centers is also related to the demand and digital activity of the local people.”

Rose Mutiso believes that opening data centers in African countries will also improve the power related facilities there.

Rose Mutiso says, “If the data centers are opened here, they will become the main electricity customers. This money can be used to improve the entire network of power generation and supply. At the same time, there will be no threat to the local industries.”

The development of energy sources in these countries of Africa

Rose Mutiso says that solar and wind energy sources are developing in many eastern African countries including Kenya. Many technology companies have set strict goals to reduce carbon emissions for themselves and this green energy will help them to achieve this goal.

According to Rose Mutiso- One feature of the African Data Center market is that apart from American companies, many regional companies are also making their data centers here.

Common people will also benefit from this because the speed of streaming movies or music from the Internet will increase because the farthest is as far as the speed is as low.

When there will be these servers in the data center in the area itself, the content will be fast. This will also help local companies in data storage.

Everyday Mootiso also reminds that in African countries, common people are also facing a huge power shortage.

In such a situation, selling electricity to the data center will be income which can be used to improve the electricity network. But it is also very important to have a balance between these two things.

Do we have enough energy to run AI

So now let’s return to our biggest question, do we have enough energy to run AI? At present, it seems that we have enough energy for this and in future there are great possibilities to get green energy from Africa.

The biggest challenge before us will be how most of the power to run the AI working centers should be obtained from renewable or green sources so that it does not affect the environment.

At the same time, we may also have to think about applying control, that AI should be used for important work because through AI, there is a lot of electricity spend in making comic pictures or changing someone’s voice.

Later, the need for electricity of AI can also increase. But as we heard from our experts, it is also likely that the models of Super AI can overcome many of our problems as well as the problem of energy shortage.
