The dark web is always a hot topic when we talk about using the internet for good or bad. Recently, it’s back in the news because hackers broke into some websites and stole data.

What Is The Dark Net?

  • There are many websites on the internet that you can’t find using regular search engines like Google or Bing. These are called the dark net or deep net.
  • Unlike normal websites, this is a network that only certain people can get into. You need special permission, software, and settings to access it.
  • The Information Technology Act of 2000 is a law that helps deal with all kinds of cybercrimes in the country. When law enforcement finds out about these crimes, they take action according to this law.
  • When we talk about getting to different parts of the internet, we can break it down into three areas:

1. Surface Web

  • This is the part of the internet we use every day.
  • For example, when you search for something on Google or Yahoo, you get results without needing special permission.
  • Search engines list these websites, so you can find them easily.

2. Deep Web

  • You can’t find these websites just by using search engines.
  • To get to a document on the deep web, you need to go to its specific address (URL) and log in with a username and password.
  • Examples include your Gmail account, blogging websites, government publications, and academic databases. These are legal but require permission to access.

3. Dark Web

  • The dark web (or dark net) is a part of the internet that you can’t access with regular search engines.
  • It’s used for illegal activities like human trafficking, buying and selling drugs, and trading weapons.
  • According to the Narcotics Control Bureau, there were four cases between 2015 and 2017 where people used the dark net to buy and sell illegal drugs.
  • Dark web sites are hidden using a tool called Tor encryption, which makes them impossible to find with normal search engines.
  • To access the dark web, you need a special browser called Tor (The Onion Router). It’s called “The Onion Router” because it encrypts your data layer by layer, using a network of nodes instead of a single, insecure server. This keeps users anonymous.
  • The dark web makes up 96% of the entire internet, while the surface web is only 4%.
  • A well-known example of a dark web site is the Silk Road Marketplace, where people bought and sold illegal items, including weapons.
