UPI (Unified Payment Interface) has made online transactions very easy. You could now make transactions of hundreds and millions in a few seconds. As per the data released by the Finance Ministry on February 28, 2025, the volume of UPI transactions crossed 16.999 billion in January 2025. This is a record of more than ₹23 lakh. This is the highest volume recorded in any month.
With the increasing use of UPI, the fraud cases associated with it are also increasing rapidly. A new rip-off has now been added to the fraud cases arising every day-‘UPI Auto-Pay Request Scam.’ In this rip-off, scammers can loot customers and borrow money from their bank account. So, be cautious and careful about this rip-off.

Question-1: What is UPI Auto Pay feature?
Answer- UPI Auto Pay feature works on regular charges. Recurring charge is a charge that is made mechanically over a continuous period of time like monthly, quarterly or yearly. In this, the consumer provides permission as soon as possible because the charge is made mechanically over a continuous period of time. With the advent of this feature, the charging of everlasting costs each month like cellular recharges, mutual fund investments, credit score card invoice charges or OTT subscription plans gets automated with out the dates. Its biggest advantage is that it saves from past-due prices and carrier dips.

Answer- Money is mechanically deducted in UPI Auto-Pay. Taking advantage of this, cyber thugs can extract cash from the financial institution loans of humans with the aid of sending ‘Auto-Pay Requests’. In this rip-off, fraudsters trick any man or woman into approving the charges (recurring charges) on a regular basis using UPI Auto-Pay.

Cybercriminals can send a hyperlink via messages, emails or social media. When the consumer approves UPI auto-pay with the help of clicking in this link, his cash starts getting deducted.
Scammers can pose as financial institution or UPI client care officials. They ask the consumer to enter the vehicle PIN to spark vehicle-pick-pay. Scammers can quickly withdraw cash from the consumer’s account as soon as the PIN is entered.
Some scammers trap customers with reasonably priced subscriptions on faux apps or websites. When the consumer makes the charge, the cash is ready to be deducted from his financial institution account every month.
Scammers can initiate vehicle-payment with the help of enticing them with cashback, praise or mortgage approval. When the consumer accepts the request to avail the offer, the cash starts getting deducted.
Question-4: If UPI vehicle payment is rip-off, can the money be recovered?
Answer- Cyber expert Rahul Mishra says that the chances of this depend on the steps you take and the use of well-timed action. If you quickly resort to a complaint, the chances of getting your money back increase. For this, contact the bank or UPI carrier provider at once. Go to the UPI app and choose the ‘Report Fraud’ option and report the transaction once. Send a written complaint to the bank with the help of email or visit a branch. Use the ‘Dispute Raise’ option with the UPI app. Most UPI apps have a “Dispute Raise” option from which you can file a dispute. If it is a fraudulent transaction and it can be proven, you can get the money back from the bank or UPI carrier provider.
Question-5: Can UPI vehicle payment be rip-off at all?
Answer- The vioiclemobile-pay feature is best activated while the consumer himself gives permission for it. If you no longer like this feature, you can exit it from your UPI app or cancel the unwanted subscription.
Question-6: Does an alert come on every vehiclemobile-pay request?
Answer- Yes, every time a new UPI vehiclemobile-pay request comes, a notification comes on the maximum app and you are requested for guide approval. So, it is very important now to accept any request in a hurry. If you detect any request suspicious, reject it.
Question-7: What to do in case a car pay request has been approved by mistake using Paytm?
Answer- If you have mistakenly received a suspicious request by default, cancel that regular payment by going into the UPI app once. Inform your bank account and also the app’s customer care and check your UPI settings.
