The concept of cyber crime itself is very broad, but it is not that difficult to understand. If there is any difficulty, it is to deal with cyber crimes. The word “cyber” is used in a very broad sense today, but to understand its entire concept and the dimensions of its use in the present perspective, it is very important to first know about the origin of this word.
Actually, here it is relevant to know first of all where did this “cyber” word come from? In what sense did its use begin and in what broad sense is it being used today in this era of information and communication technology?
Although there have been constant differences of opinion among technical experts regarding the origin of this word and its meanings, but if we take a look at the historical journey of this word, we can easily understand its overall existence. In fact in all languages the word ‘cyber (Cyber)’ has widely made inroads with its corresponding structure and pronunciation. That is, no other name or synonym is found anywhere in its standard form. Therefore, even in Hindi language this word is popular in its original form ‘cyber’.
In our everyday life today we read, hear and use many words like cyber-space, cyber-zone, cyber-cafe, cyber-attack. But basically the word ‘cyber’ is considered to originate from, that word is ‘cybernetics (Cybernetics)’.
First, in the last years of the 1940’s the term ‘cybernetics’ was used for a method, which formed a medium of control and communication between human and machines. At that time the scope of ‘cybernetics’ mainly included activities related to computer science, engineering, biology and the progress being made in these fields.
‘Cybernetics’ The word is thought to originate from the Greek (Greek) word Kubernetties, of which the English synonym is — Pilot or Steersman, namely guide or sailor. In other words it can also be called a guide or guide.
To be understood in a straightforward sense, at that time ‘cybernetics’ meant a method which played the role of a guide in better use of various resources and machines by humans to achieve their goals in fields like computer science, engineering or biology.
Thus ‘cybernetics’ was related to scientific activities that aimed to develop human state-of-the-art structures and practices in all these areas.
In fact, the word ‘cyber’ is a short and constructed form of ‘cybernetics’, which later came to be used in the global environment directly as a synonym for all fields and resources related to computer science, Internet and information– communication technology.
Gradually the word ‘cyber’ became an “strong prefix (Prefix)” of coining many new words in this field. So far more than about 500 new words have been coined through the term ‘cyber’, most of which are extremely prevalent today in terms of usage — like cyber-attack, cyber-security, cyber-community, cyber-policy and so on.
Undoubtedly, in the present perspective the term ‘cyber’ can be defined in a very broad form in terms of meaning, rather than being considered a simple technical term, as follows
“cyber” means an object, place or system that is related to a computer or a group of interconnected computers (computer network/Internet) and other communication mediums connected to them.
Now if this ‘cyber’ word is combined with ‘crime’ as a prefix (Prefix), the new combined word that is formed is — ‘cyber-crime’ (Cyber Cryme).
‘Cyber’ After understanding the various meanings of the word we can clearly say that
“Cyber-crime” refers to illegal activities that are carried out through or with the help of computer networks, electronic devices connected to information and communication technology, and the Internet.
Cyber crime is a crime in which computers and networks are used.
This category includes a variety of crimes, from downloading music files illegally to stealing money from online bank accounts.
Cyber criminals do not always commit crimes out of greed for money;
Cyber crimes also include non-economic crimes.
It includes many types of frauds like job related fraud, marriage related fraud, theft and misuse of personal information (like Aadhaar related information, credit/debit card information, bank account details etc.), any person on social media. Defamation, spread of computer virus etc.
Like ordinary crimes, cyber crimes also include acts and conduct that are immoral and harm society and law and order.
Yet cyber crimes are different from ordinary crimes because they are committed in different ways.
Usually a criminal uses a gun, knife or other weapon to attack a person
But in the cyber world, crime or attack is not committed directly but indirectly through — computer networks or communication media.
Although many times computers are also used in traditional wrongdoings, but as far as cyber crime is concerned, it includes special types of crimes committed with the help of computers and information technology — like extortion, Identity theft, credit/debit card fraud, stealing personal information from computers, hacking, illegal downloading, cyber stalking, Virus spread and many other types of criminal activities.
Cyber crimes also include many other types of organized crimes committed using resources related to computer-internet and information-communication technology; For example, taking wrong receipt of someone’s bank account, stealing and selling confidential information or stealing confidential information of a company and using it for business profit. In these illegal activities, sometimes the computer of an innocent person or organization is made a means of cyber attack.
In reality, cyber crimes are those crimes which are committed through computers, internet and information communication mediums targeting any person or group of people and whose purpose is to hurt the reputation of any person or organization, cause physical or mental harm to it. Or it may cause damage to his property. These crimes use state-of-the-art information and communication technology and resources related to them and by doing so, criminals can cause huge harm to their targets indirectly rather than directly.
To commit cyber crimes, criminals often use readrooms, e-mails, notice boards, groups of people and organizations built on the internet and social media and mobile phones and smartphones etc. as mediums, where the victim gets trapped in innocent tricks. It easily gets trapped in their trap.
In today’s era, cyber crimes have posed another big challenge and that is to spread obscenity and threat to privacy; In which personal photographs or videos and other information of a person are obtained and made known through the use of information media or personality is harmed by using them.
If seen from a broader perspective at the global level, cyber crimes are proving to be a big threat to the security of a nation and its economy. Certainly, information technology has provided opportunities at the international level whose misuse can lead to a country or terrorist organization intensively using information technology as a cyber weapon against other countries.
