Artificial Intelligence: How Fraud Happens Through Voice, How To Avoid It

Amidst the rapid changes in the world of technology, people are being advised not to “trust everything and everyone”.

Experts in the field of cyber security have issued this advisory amid reports of frauds being committed against youth and senior citizens through artificial intelligence.

Big financial frauds are being committed by imitating someone’s voice through AI.

No evidence is left behind in this process.

In such a situation, investigation is also difficult, let alone getting back the looted money. The matter has reached such a point that people are being advised not to pick up calls from unknown numbers or unknown people.

Need to change thinking

Experts in the field of cyber security believe that it is necessary to change thinking to face these challenges.

CloudSEK’s Chief Executive Officer Rahul Shashi tells BBC Hindi, “In the new world, you cannot trust every person or everything. You have to mold yourself as a person who doubts everything. And does not trust all things and all people. Actually, you need to change your thinking.”

A shocking case has come to light in Madhya Pradesh in which a person was called and financially defrauded.

The person calling told the person who picked up the phone that his teenage son had raped him and he would have to pay fifty thousand rupees to settle the matter.

The person calling also made the father play the crying voice of his son.

On this, the father immediately transferred fifty thousand rupees. Later it was found out that his son was absolutely fine and this was a fake call.

This case is similar to those cases of fraud in which the fraudster impersonates a person’s voice and calls his friend and says that he is stuck in an unknown country and needs money immediately.

Shashidhar CN, a cyber security expert at SecureIT Consultancy Services, says, “This happened to one of my friends. He received a message on a social media platform in his friend’s voice asking for help, saying that he has lost all his belongings and needs immediate financial help.”

Shashidhar CN says, “When this friend in India called and asked about his friend’s well-being, he was surprised to know that his friend was absolutely fine. When he told his friend about this being said on his social media account, his friend was stunned to hear his fake voice. This voice was just like his.”

Such frauds are happening with uneducated people as well as educated people.

Shashidhar gives an example of this and says, “A few days ago I got a call. I was told that this call was from the telecom department. I was told that if I do not give my KYC details by night, all the numbers issued in my name will be blocked. Then I was told to press a number to proceed…anyone can be fooled.”

“I knew that this is a case of phishing in which they take your KYC details. After this they commit fraud. I checked this number on an app which identifies numbers. From this I came to know that this number was from Madhya Pradesh. I blocked the number and defined it as fraud on the app so that if anyone gets a call from this number, he knows that it is a fraud call.”

How easy is it to create a voice through AI

He says, “In such cases, the person who picks up the phone or receives the message should not blindly trust such a message or call.”

Shashidhar says that there are many tools available on the Internet that can take a sample of someone’s voice and create a deep-fake video with that person’s “voice and speaking style that cannot be traced. You will be amazed by using these tools.”

At the same time, Rahul Shashi says, “I can call you and record the call, which will give me enough data to create a fake call. Some algorithms need seed data. I can get seed data by making a video or normal call to you. This is very easy. Anyone can talk to an unknown person on an I-call. During this conversation, his voice can be recorded to commit fraud.”

Cyber law academician Navi Vijayshankar says, “For most such fraudsters, social media is like a treasure trove from where they can copy voices as well as videos and photographs. It seems that their focus is on children’s social media accounts from where they can get as much information as possible.”

At present, technology is available to create deep fakes. But there is no technology to counter it.

Vijayshankar says, “This is an issue of awareness in a way. People react in panic. But this can be resolved by running a large-scale awareness campaign. There is no other solution.”

Vijayshankar goes a step further and suggests that the banking sector should secure the information of the victims with the help of technology.

He says, “When a person falls prey to such fraud, he makes an online payment. Since it is an official payment, the bank does not pay attention to it, unless the amount is bigger than the usual transactions made by the account holder. When they complain about this to the bank, they can contact the bank in which the money was deposited. One of the shortcomings in our banking system is that the victim’s bank does not contact the bank where the criminal has an account. This system should be automatic.”
