Artificial intelligence chatbots are becoming common in our conversations and emotional lives. But recent studies and events raise the question: are these chatbots saving lives or unintentionally endangering them?
According to a new report, popular chatbots aren’t always helpful with suicide-related questions. Sometimes, instead of stopping users, these platforms give information about suicide methods. In one case in America, a 16-year-old died by suicide after talking with AI. His parents claim that chatbots and social media made his fragile mind even more vulnerable.
The situation in India isn’t different. In 2022, 171,000 people died by suicide, and globally this number reaches 720,000 every year. Experts say that digital platforms and chatbots deeply affect the mental health of teens and young adults.
Still, the picture isn’t all bad. Uttar Pradesh police recently saved a student’s life in just 16 minutes. The police received an alert from an AI system that the student was trying to die by suicide. Timely action saved his life. Such examples show that if technology is used correctly, it can save lives.
Mental health experts believe that the problem isn’t in the technical design of chatbots, but in how they are used and watched. A cyber crime expert says:
“It’s dangerous to think of AI as just a tool for talking. When it talks about sensitive topics like suicide or depression, every response can be a matter of life and death for the user. Therefore, it’s important to have strict rules and human monitoring of chatbots.”
