A Baby Was Born From An Embryo That Had Been Kept For 30 Years

A couple in America has given birth to a baby from an embryo that was frozen for more than 30 years. It is believed that this is the oldest embryo from which a child has been successfully born.

35-year-old Lindsay, a resident of Ohio, and her 34-year-old husband Tim Pierce became parents to this child, Thaddeus Daniel Pierce, on Saturday.

In a conversation with MIT Technology Review, which explains the new technology and related information, Lindsay said that her family felt “as if a science fiction film was going on.” The previous record of a child being born from a 20-year-old embryo was when twins were born in 2022 from an embryo that had been frozen since 1992.

Thousands of dollars spent to preserve embryos

The Pierce couple had been trying for a child for the past seven years, then they decided to adopt the embryos of 62-year-old Linda Orchard, which had been frozen since 1994.

Orchard and her husband had resorted to IVF process for this embryo. At that time, Orchard had prepared a total of four embryos. One of them gave birth to her daughter, who is now 30 years old. While the other three embryos were preserved.

Even after separating from her husband, Orchard neither destroyed the embryos nor gave them for research. She also did not give it to any unknown family.

Orchard wanted to remain in touch with the child, because her daughter would have a biological connection with it.

That is why she spent thousands of dollars every year to preserve the embryos.

Finally, she contacted a Christian embryo adoption agency, ‘Nightlight Christian Adoptions’.

‘Wanted a child, not a new record’

This agency runs a program called Snowflakes, in which the embryo donor has the right to decide who the embryo should be given to.

Orchard gave priority to a married, Christian Caucasian couple living in America.

In a conversation with MIT Technology Review, she said, “I wanted the embryo not to go out of the country.”

After this, she met the Pierce couple. Then the process was completed at Rejoice Fertility Clinic in Tennessee, USA.

The clinic says that they are ready to hand over the embryo they get to anyone, there is no condition regarding age or circumstances in this matter.

Lindsay Pierce said, “We were not doing this to break any record, we just wanted a child.”

Orchard said that she has not yet met the child personally, but she feels that there will be a glimpse of her daughter in it.
