Powerful And Respected Politicians Of The Current BJP Government

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which officially came into being on 6 April 1980, has steadily transformed from a small political group to the dominant force of Indian politics in the 21st century. A number of leaders have shaped its philosophy, strategy and reach over the past several decades. At present, the BJP government is at the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and guidance of senior figures like Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, JP Nadda and others represent a group of powerful and respected politicians. These leaders enjoy respect not only within the party but across India and in many cases internationally as well. Their political journey marked by discipline, ideological clarity and engagement with the masses makes them important personalities in the democratic framework of India.

To understand their influence, one must look at their personal lives, political milestones and the turning points that brought them to positions of great authority. Each leader carries his own story of struggle, sacrifice and achievement and together they shape the face of the BJP government in the current era.

1. Narendra Damodardas Modi (Prime Minister of India)

Narendra Modi stands as the most prominent face of the BJP at the present time. Born on 17 September 1950 in Vadnagar, Gujarat, to a simple family of a tea seller, Modi’s life is a story of rising from humble beginnings to the highest office in the country. His early association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) shaped his discipline and ideological foundation. In 1987, Modi formally joined the BJP and in a short time, he rose to prominence due to his organizational skills.

Modi became the Chief Minister of Gujarat on 7 October 2001 after the resignation of Keshubhai Patel. His tenure as CM lasted till 22 May 2014, marking almost 13 years of governance. During this period, Gujarat witnessed massive industrial growth and infrastructure development, making him a recognized leader on the national stage. However, his tenure also witnessed the tragic 2002 Gujarat riots, which drew both criticism and scrutiny, although he emerged politically stronger.

The turning point in Modi’s political career came in 2013, when he was chosen as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 general elections. In May 2014, the BJP under his leadership won a historic victory, winning 282 seats on its own and a majority for the first time in history. On 26 May 2014, Modi was sworn in as the 14th Prime Minister of India.

His first term (2014–2019) saw major initiatives such as Make in India (25 September 2014), Digital India (1 July 2015), Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (2 October 2014) and Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (28 August 2014). Another bold decision was demonetisation on 8 November 2016, targeting black money and counterfeit currency. His government also implemented the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on 1 July 2017, simplifying the taxation system.

In the 2019 general elections Modi led the BJP to an even bigger victory, winning 303 seats on his own. His second term began on 30 May 2019, with landmark decisions such as the abrogation of Article 370 on 5 August 2019, which removed the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Another milestone was the Ram Mandir Bhoomi Pujan on 5 August 2020, which fulfilled a decades-old demand of the party and its supporters.

Internationally, Modi has established himself as a strong global leader, addressing events such as the Howdy Modi rally in Houston (22 September 2019) and building close ties with world powers. His policies during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2021), including the vaccination drive launched on 16 January 2021, demonstrated India’s ability to manage crises.

Today, Narendra Modi is not just the Prime Minister but also a symbol of the BJP’s strength. His leadership, charisma and ability to connect with the masses make him one of the most powerful and respected politicians of our time.

2. Amit Anilchandra Shah (Home Minister of India)

Amit Shah, often called the “Chanakya” of Indian politics, is one of the most influential leaders of the BJP today. Born on 22 October 1964 in Mumbai, Shah joined the RSS at an early age and later became an active member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the BJP. His political journey intensified in the 1980s and 1990s when he came close to Narendra Modi during the BJP’s expansion in Gujarat.

Shah’s rise became evident when he was elected MLA from Sarkhej in Gujarat in 1997, a seat he held until 2007. Known for his organisational talent, he played a key role in the BJP’s victory in Gujarat under Modi’s leadership. Shah became the BJP president after Modi’s elevation as PM in 2014 (9 July 2014). Under his leadership, the BJP expanded rapidly, winning one state after another and becoming the world’s largest political party in terms of membership.

As Union Home Minister from 30 May 2019, Shah played a key role in implementing the repeal of Article 370 on 5 August 2019 and pushing through the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on 11 December 2019. Though these decisions were debated, they demonstrated his ability to take firm and bold steps. His strong political strategies helped the BJP expand in states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Assam and West Bengal.

Shah is respected for his mastery in election management. The 2019 Lok Sabha victory, where the BJP crossed 300 seats, was largely attributed to his booth-level strategies and cadre mobilisation. His tenure as Home Minister also saw measures to strengthen internal security, anti-terror laws and border management.

Today, Amit Shah is considered second only to Narendra Modi in the BJP hierarchy. His sharp political acumen, organisational control and fearless decision-making make him a powerful and respected leader in the current government.

3. Rajnath Singh (Defence Minister of India)

Born on 10 July 1951 in Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh, Rajnath Singh represents the moderate and experienced face of the BJP. His political journey began with the RSS and he joined the BJP’s predecessor Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He first became an MLA from Mirzapur in 1977.

Over the decades, Rajnath Singh held key positions including Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (28 October 2000 – 8 March 2002), Union Agriculture Minister (2003–2004) and two-time President of the BJP (2005–2009 and 2013–2014). During his leadership, the BJP maintained organisational unity and ideological strength.

As Defence Minister since 30 May 2019, Rajnath Singh has overseen important developments including the aftermath of the Balakot airstrikes (February 2019) and strengthening India’s defence preparedness. On 8 September 2020, he inaugurated 44 bridges constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), thereby enhancing infrastructure along the borders. His visit to Ladakh on 3 July 2020 amid tensions with China was a symbol of India’s resolve to protect its sovereignty.

Revered for his calm demeanour and balanced approach, Rajnath Singh remains one of the most senior and respected leaders in the BJP even today.

4. Nitin Gadkari (Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways)

One of the most dynamic leaders of the current BJP government, Nitin Jairam Gadkari is often referred to as the “infrastructure man of India”. Born on 27 May 1957 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, Gadkari’s association with the RSS began in his youth. He later joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a natural political training ground for many young activists who went on to become influential BJP leaders. His formal rise in politics began when he was elected a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 1989 and held the position until 2014.

An important milestone in Gadkari’s career came in 1995, when the Shiv Sena–BJP alliance formed the government in Maharashtra, and he became the Minister of Public Works Department. During this period, he spearheaded the ambitious Mumbai–Pune Expressway project, which began in 1997 and was completed in 2002, transforming travel in Maharashtra. His efficiency and vision for infrastructure development earned him recognition within the BJP.

Gadkari served as the president of the BJP from 19 December 2009 to 23 January 2013, becoming the first leader from outside the Hindi heartland to hold the post. Though his tenure as party president had many challenges, it was also a time when the BJP was preparing for a comeback on the national stage.

Gadkari was appointed Minister of Road Transport and Highways on 26 May 2014 in the 2014 Modi government, a position he still holds. Under his leadership, highway construction in India reached record levels. For example, in 2017–2018, highway construction averaged about 27 kilometres per day, and by 2020–2021, it reached about 37 kilometres per day despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his second term as minister after 30 May 2019, Gadkari continued to emphasize on green and sustainable development, promoting ethanol-blended fuel, electric vehicles and biofuels. His policy measures are considered futuristic, aimed at reducing India’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Gadkari is respected across political parties for his practical, result-oriented approach. Unlike many leaders who focus on rhetoric, Gadkari often highlights figures, deadlines and project completions. His direct work style and reputation as a “doer” make him one of the most respected leaders in the BJP government.

Nadda became a member of the Rajya Sabha in 2012 and was appointed Minister of Health and Family Welfare on 9 November 2014 under the Modi government, in which role he played a key role in launching the world’s largest health assurance program, the Ayushman Bharat Yojana (23 September 2018).

When Amit Shah joined the Union Cabinet as Home Minister in 2019, Nadda was appointed as the BJP’s working president on 17 June 2019, and later, as full-time president on 20 January 2020. His tenure as party chief coincided with the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2021), during which he focused on grassroots mobilisation, welfare activities and digital outreach.

The BJP under Nadda performed strongly in several state elections, including Bihar (2020), Uttar Pradesh (2022) and Gujarat (2022), further cementing the party’s dominance in Indian politics.
