Rahul Gandhi has recently made serious claims about the Election Commission of India (ECI). He has called his revelations “atom bombs”. He has shared his own solid evidence about “vote theft” in Maharashtra elections. These allegations immediately caused an uproar. ECI and BJP have criticized his claims. Yet, several days later, no clear evidence has emerged proving his claims false.
This situation raises important questions about India’s democracy. Can there be more than 1 lakh fake voters in a single area? Can 80 people stay at the same address? Is ECI failing to stop wrongdoing? Or worse, was the 2024 Lok Sabha election itself the wrong way to go? We will take a closer look at Rahul Gandhi’s claims. We will see if his words about the Election Commission working together with BJP are true. This issue is a serious matter for the democratic future of India.
For many years, some political parties have been paying attention to the problems associated with electronic voting machines (EVMs). However, many experts, including The Patriots, have long argued that EVMs are mostly safe. They cannot be tampered with on a large scale. Instead, the real concern often lies elsewhere. The real problems are manipulation of voter lists, removing names, and preventing people from voting. These issues are a clear truth in India’s democracy. The political groups must take account of these.
What can EVM hacking do if the Election Commission itself is making a mess? Questions have already been raised on the work of ECI. For example, why did Election Commissioners Arun Goyal and Ashok Lavasa resign before the end of their tenure? These incidents are unusual for such an important organization. Questions were also raised about the role of ECI in the 2024 elections. All these past events add more to the current discussion.
Rahul Gandhi held a detailed press conference. He presented what he described as concrete evidence of election rigging. He used a sophisticated presentation to share his findings from data from the 2024 Lok Sabha election. He said that in Maharashtra alone, one crore new voters were added in five months. This number is more than the total voters added in the last five years.
The Congress party faced difficulties in analyzing this data. ECI gave the poll data in soft copy. But this file could not be read with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. This meant that Congress workers had to manually look at large piles of papers. He manually analyzed every voter entry for months.
Rahul Gandhi also pointed towards a disturbing trend. He claimed that the Election Commission wants to destroy the CCTV footage. He suggested that this was being done to prevent questions about extra voters appearing after 5 pm on election day. Those who follow elections closely have heard similar concerns before. But there are special details in the new information given by Congress.
Mahadevpura constituency case
Congress employed between 30 and 40 people for months to study the voter list. His work revealed major rigging in Mahadevpura assembly constituency. The area is part of the Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha constituency. Rahul Gandhi said that out of total 6 to 6.5 lakh voters in Mahadevpura, 1 lakh 250 voters were fake. These people should not have been allowed to vote.
In a reversal of previous claims, which were often based on speculation, Congress gave a vote-by-vote breakdown. They studied different names and found a variety of glitches:
Rahul Gandhi told that this detailed study was only for one constitution. It took a lot of time and effort. He suggested that similar problems could occur in 25 second Constituencies. The election decided 25 seats by a margin of 33,000 votes. If such fraud had happened in other areas also, the results of the entire Lok Sabha elections could have been very different. Was the 2024 election a “stealing victory” because of these issues?
The story of Mahadevpura tells a lot. In this locality, BJP got a huge lead in 2024. He won by 33,000 votes, while he was defeated in seven second assembly segments of the same Lok Sabha Constituency. Congress believes that this points to a big problem. He claims that these irregularities show that the entire electoral system and the Election Commission itself have been compromised. This is a very serious allegation. This raises questions about the fairness of Indian elections.
After such serious allegations, many people expected a clear answer from the Election Commission. Rahul Gandhi’s claims could have been proved wrong with the point-to-point reply. This would have helped to re-establish trust in ECI. However, ECI’s reputation has been going bad for some time. For months, even years, ECI has avoided answering many questions.
ECI has often denied these things:
When Karnataka’s ECI finally responded, it did so in an indirect manner. He issued a statement asking Rahul Gandhi to submit his claims under the affidavit. Many people were surprised by this answer. It did not directly speak to the evidence given by Congress. Instead, it put the burden on Rahul Gandhi.
Experts pointed out that the rule stated by ECI (Rule #20) was incorrect for this situation. This rule applies to claims made during the draft voter roll stage. Rahul Gandhi’s allegations are related to the final voter list. This attitude of ECI raises further questions. From this it seems that the ECI and the ruling party, the BJP, are together. Both have said that raising questions on the election process puts democracy in danger. Nevertheless, neither of them has provided clear evidence that Rahul Gandhi’s claims are false.
The issues raised by Rahul Gandhi are not completely new. Fact-checking website Alt News had investigated a story of similar voter fraud. He found that Aditya Srivastava’s case was true. His name was on two places in Lucknow East, Mumbai Suburban and Karnataka. This clearly shows the problem of duplicate entry. Whether or not these actions were deliberate, it is a matter of concern that this happened. This has a negative impact on the process of ECI.
The Election Commission itself had earlier believed that the problems of duplicate voters should be investigated. But then, the matter was quietly suppressed. There was no public debate or discussion on this. It’s the same thing as the issue with the CCTV footage. When Congress asked for footage of people breaking into polling booths after 6 p.m., ECI changed its rules. She announced that footage of any polling booth would not be given. The reason was cited as avoiding “non-essential political controversy”. It shows a desire to hide the truth rather than resolve concerns.
ECI has also taken a strong stand against the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had suggested including Aadhaar, EPIC (Voter ID) and ration card data in the Voter Registration System (SIR) for Bihar elections. ECI declined. In addition, ECI has consistently refused to allow VVPAT slip counting. This process helps verify EVM results. All these works call into question ECI’s commitment to transparency.
Questions have also been raised on the work of ECI in other states. For example, investigative journalist Ajit Anjum faced FIR for his work on election irregularities in Bihar. The Supreme Court has also ordered ECI to release a list of the 6.5 million voters it was planning to remove. ECI is expected to respond by 9 August. It shows the privacy patterns around voter list management.
These allegations point to a major threat to India’s democracy. Voter list is the foundation of the democratic process. It protects the right to vote of every citizen. If this system is open to manipulation or gross negligence, it undermines trust. It is still not clear how much of this was intentional. But this highlights the shortcomings in India’s election infrastructure.
Consider these contradictions:
On Rahul Gandhi’s question, ECI asked for evidence in the affidavit. Instead, they should have promised an investigation. This ignoring attitude makes people think about whose voice ECI actually represents.
However, Congress is also not untouched by its mistakes. In his first press conference, he talked about anti-incumbency sentiments. He also raised questions as to why exit polls, which had predicted BJP to get too many seats, were so wrong. Although these are the right issues to discuss, they can divert attention from the main issue of voter fraud.
For years, opposition parties, including Congress, had been focusing heavily on EVM. Despite repeated persuasions that EVMs were largely safe, this stance damaged their credibility. Rahul Gandhi now seems to be focusing on the Election Commission only. He suggested that the elections would be fair if ECI acted properly. This new method can be more effective.
Another big mistake of Congress is their timing. Voter lists are given to all political parties before elections. Why didn’t Congress catch these missing addresses, impossible living arrangements, duplicate entries and wrong photos earlier? This shows weakness in his own election management. He had written a letter to ECI in Maharashtra but did not follow up strongly on it.
Moreover, if these fraudulent activities took place in Karnataka, the Congress party was in power at that time. The machinery of ECI depends to a large extent on the state authorities. This raises the question: Why did Congress not catch these fraudulent activities when its own officials were involved?
Some argue that if BJP had done this manipulation, they would have done it everywhere. They should have got more than 240 seats, perhaps even winning in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu or Karnataka. Rahul Gandhi’s counter argument is that the manipulation was done strategically. To avoid much doubt, the focus was on those seats where the competition was tough.
It is not clear whether Congress will take this matter to court or not. The negative decision of the court may weaken the political pressure they are trying to create. Now the decision is whether this matter should be taken forward legally or it should be maintained as a political issue. They can demand data and CCTV footage from ECI.
Mainstream media has mostly ignored Rahul Gandhi’s allegations. Therefore it is very important for the opposition to take action. They can create a unified model. Regional parties in every state can expose similar election irregularities. Can the INDIA block unite on this?
Despite winning quite a few seats, the INDIA block seems to be scattered after the election results. They often give more importance to their petty interests rather than a common national agenda. However, this issue of electoral honesty can be a unifying force. Many leaders in the political arena have raised similar concerns:
Even a small percentage of votes added or removed may change the outcome of the election. In Bihar, a man was reported to be the father of 138 voters. Suvendu Adhikari of BJP also expressed concern over the irregularities.
Regardless of who is associated with the party, everyone agrees that the voter list should be transparent. BJP should have full access to the voter list in Bengal and Congress in Maharashtra. What is the problem with this? If a united opposition identifies sample constituencies in every state and publicly challenges ECI, it could lead to change. Otherwise, these important questions may simply disappear, as has happened before.
These detailed allegations demand answers. It is not enough for the Election Commission to avoid or ignore them. The fairness of India’s elections is at stake. Transparency and accountability are essential for democracy to flourish. The time has come for a full and public investigation into these serious claims.
