Romance scams occur when a criminal adopts fake online recognition to gain your affection and trust. The scamster then uses the illusion of a romantic or close relationship to tamper with you and/or steal.
If someone asks you to participate, or if you see fraud activity, you should know about these plans. Potential fraud indicators include the following:
• Scamsters often say that they are engaged in projects outside the United States. This makes it easier to avoid meeting personally. They often ask for money for medical emergency or unexpected legal fees.
• The intention of the scamster is to establish a relationship as soon as possible and gain confidence. Scamsters can propose marriage and plan to meet personally, but it will never happen. Eventually they will ask for money.
• You meet someone on a dating site, just play an online game, or scroll your social media feed. This person immediately takes interest in you, suggests you to go to another stage to talk, and turn on the attraction. They will flatter you, please themselves, and make you assure you that you are together. Only you never meet personally. Ultimately, they will start asking for money that can start small and grow more often over time. The demand for money turns into demand and it continues continuously. Remember that sometimes these Marine Corps Sergeant contain fake accounts, who found that their image was used to gain people’s trust and then to cheat money from them.
• Searching the reverse image of the person to see if the image, name or details have been used elsewhere. Google image search tool helps in identifying a person using a picture.
• Slowly move forward and ask a lot of questions using video calls through your phone or computer. Beware of people who are not available for video calls due to poor service or being out of the country.
• If a person looks too perfect or ask you to communicate directly, then be careful.
• Be careful about the information you share online and/or on social media. This information can be used against you.
• Do not send money to someone with whom you have only communicated online or on the phone. Such as Venmo, Paypal, or other mobile payment services.
• Do not share your bank account information with someone who has only met you online, because they are probably trying to steal from you.
