Earlier, the Tax Department has extended the last date for filing income tax returns for FY 2025 from 31 July to 15 September 2025. The Income Tax Department had given this information on 27 May.
Usually ITR filings start on April 1st, but this year it is delayed. Last year also it started in April. The reason for the delay was the non-availability of online tools required for ITR forms.
CA Anand Jain had said – ‘This extension is a welcome step, as ITR filing facility is not available on the tax portal till 5 pm on 27 May 2025.
In many cases, the Annual Information Statement i.e. AIS is also not available properly. Therefore, this extension will provide relief to both professionals and taxpayers
E-filing utilities are the software tools that the Income Tax Department provides to taxpayers to file their returns. There are two types:
Online Utility: It is mostly used by individual taxpayers like salaried people. It contains pre-filled data such as salary, interest, income and TDS.
JSON and Excel Utilities: These are used by tax professionals, where data is filled offline and uploaded to the portal. It is not possible to file returns without these tools, as they are essential for data validation, form submission and system integration.
If the return is not filed by 15 September 2025, there will be a penalty of Rs 1,000 for those earning less than Rs 5 lakh and Rs 5,000 for those earning more than Rs 5 lakh.
