The ministry said that speculation and inaccurate data about Nipah virus cases are being spread in some sections of the media. The ministry has advised the public to rely only on verified information received from official sources. Avoid spreading unconfirmed news.

The ministry said that after the confirmation of two Nipah cases, the centre, in collaboration with the West Bengal government, initiated immediate and comprehensive public health measures as per the prescribed protocol. “A total of 196 people were identified as being linked to confirmed cases,” the ministry said in a statement. They were traced. They were monitored and examined. They were all found asymptomatic.”

“He tested negative for the Nipah virus,” the statement continued. “No additional cases of Nipah virus disease have been reported so far,” the ministry stressed. The situation is being continuously monitored. All urgent public health measures are being taken.”

Airport Screening Increased In Asian Countries

Concern has increased in some parts of Asia due to the discovery of deadly Nipah virus cases in Bengal. According to the BBC, due to this, some countries of Asia have tightened the rules for screening at airports. Thailand has started screening passengers at three airports. Apart from this, Nepal has also started screening people coming to Kathmandu Airport and other land border posts with India.

What Are The Symptoms Of Nipah Virus?

Nipah virus spreads from animals such as pigs and bats to humans. It can also spread from one person to another through contaminated food. The World Health Organization (WHO) has included Nipah among its Top 10 priority diseases, along with pathogens such as Covid-19 and Zika. It has the potential to spread epidemics. Its incubation period is four to 14 days. People who are infected with this virus show many types of symptoms. However, sometimes no symptoms are seen.

Early symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, and sore throat. Some people may have more sleepiness, changes in consciousness, and pneumonia after this. In severe cases, encephalitis can occur, which is sometimes a life-threatening condition. This causes swelling in the brain. At present, no medicine or vaccine has been made yet to treat this disease.

When Did You Get Nipah’s First Case?

The first Nipah outbreak occurred in Malaysia in 1998 among pig farmers. It later spread to neighbouring Singapore. The virus got its name from the village where it was first found. More than 100 people died, and 1 million pigs were killed trying to contain the virus. This also caused considerable economic losses to farmers and people involved in the livestock trade.

Bangladesh has suffered the most in recent years. Since 2001, more than 100 people have died from Nipah. This virus has also been found in India. There were reports of outbreaks in West Bengal in 2001 and 2007. The southern state of Kerala has also been a hotspot of Nipah. In 2018, 19 cases were reported, of which 17 were fatal.
