Iran-Israel War: Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced ‘special status,’ because some military officials there have confirmed attacks on Iranian nuclear sites. Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, and several senior nuclear scientists have been killed, according to Israel’s Channel 12. However, Iran has not officially confirmed the number of casualties.
Israeli airstrikes on Iranian soil on 13 June have only exacerbated the long-running confrontation between the two arch-rivals. Dozens of Israeli fighter jets targeted Iran’s nuclear bases, missile factories, and top military personnel in Operation Rising Lion. There were reports of explosions in Tehran and the Natanj Uranium Enrichment Facility. “We are at a turning point in Israeli history,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a recorded video message.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced ‘special status,’ as some military officials there have confirmed attacks on Iranian nuclear sites. Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, and several senior nuclear scientists have been killed, according to Israel’s Channel 12. However, Iran has not officially confirmed the number of casualties.
On the other hand, Iran has denied making nuclear weapons and accused Israel of aggression and sabotage. It created a deep regional network through terrorist groups like Hezbollah and Hamas. Israel considers these groups a direct threat to its security.
This situation involves not only military buildup but also failing diplomacy: the US-Iran nuclear talks scheduled for Oman on 15 June were hanging in the balance ahead of the air strikes. It is no longer clear whether they will proceed or not.
Although America is a staunch ally of Israel, it has officially distanced itself from Operation Rising Lion. Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said Israel had acted unilaterally, adding, “Tonight, Israel acted unilaterally against Iran.” We are not involved in attacks against Iran, and our top priority is to protect U.S. forces in the area.”
“Let me be clear: Iran should not target U.S. interests or its personnel,” he said.
Just a day before the Israeli attack, US President Donald Trump said an Israeli attack on Iran was “very possible,” but he had reiterated his hope for a peaceful solution.
The US recalled non-essential personnel from its missions in Iraq, Jordan, and several Gulf countries. The State Department issued an advisory regarding the visit, and military assets were redeployed across the region in anticipation of possible consequences.
However, Washington’s role goes far beyond the military stance. While publicly denying military involvement, the U.S. is fully engaged in preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons and handling the wider fallout from Israeli actions.
In short, America is not a neutral side but a strategic actor, maintaining a balance in alliances, deterrence, and diplomacy.
The Israeli-Iran conflict (Israel-Iran War) is a decades-long power struggle based on ideology, security threats, and competition for the Middle East. Israel considers Iran its most dangerous enemy, largely due to Tehran’s pursuit of nuclear capabilities, its call for Israel’s destruction, and its continued support to armed groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas.
Israel believes that a nuclear-weapon Iran will change the strategic balance in the region for us and pose an existential threat to the Jewish state.
Iran, on the other hand, presents itself as anti-Israel and often uses its state media and proxy forces to condemn Israel’s legitimacy. It provides money and weapons to militias in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Gaza, which often carry out attacks on Israeli territory.
Until recently, both countries have been carrying out cyber and covert attacks on each other. But open and direct attacks have been seen in the last few months—when Iran launched a missile attack on Israel in April and now Iranian soil has been bombed by Israel. This new attack indicates the escalation of a dangerous conflict.
1. October 7, 2023: Iran-backed Hamas launches a deadly attack in southern Israel, killing more than 1,100 people. Israel launches a major military operation in Gaza.
2. October 17, 2023: Iran’s supreme leader warns that if Israel continues its campaign, major regional conflict could occur. Hezbollah opened a second front in northern Israel.
3. December 2023-March 2024: Israel escalates attacks on IRGC operatives in Syria, killing several senior commanders.
4. April 1, 2024: Israel bombed Iran’s consulate in Damascus, killing Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi. Iran vowed revenge.
5. April 13-14, 2024: Iran launches its first direct attack on Israel, firing more than 300 drones and missiles. Almost everyone was stopped.
6. April 19, 2024: Israel responds by bombing a radar site near Isfahan.
7. July 31, 2024: Hamas leader Ismail Haniya is assassinated in Tehran.
8. September 2024: Israel kills senior Hezbollah leaders, including Hassan Nasrallah and Abbas Nilforushan, deputy commander of the IRGC in Beirut.
9. October 1, 2024: Iran fires 200 ballistic missiles at Israel.
10. October 26, 2024: Israel launches Days of Repentance, attacking more than 20 sites linked to Iran.
11. January – March 2025: Fighting intensifies on several proxy fronts—Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and militias in Syria/Iraq.
12. April – June 2025: Israel accuses Iran of crossing nuclear borders. The IAEA reported a decline in transparency.
13. June 13, 2025: Israel launches Operation Rising Lion. Major nuclear and military targets were attacked. Iran has lost its top officials. The world is watching what happens next.
All eyes are on Iran. Retaliatory action is expected—whether through direct missile attacks, proxy wars, or cyber retaliatory action. The threat of major regional war is at its highest level in decades.
It is no longer a hidden struggle. Both the countries are attacking each other’s big and important targets and threatening to increase tension; in such a situation the Middle East is standing on the brink of war on many fronts. Whether diplomacy can still avert catastrophe remains to be seen.
