If you live in a place where you have to travel to two or more states for work, or you are in a transferable job where you may have to move to a new state every two-three years, then a BH series number plate can prove to be very beneficial for your car.
But what is this BH series number plate? Who can get it? What has to be done for this and are there any disadvantages of it?
Let’s know the answers to all these questions.
The BH series number plate was introduced by the Government of India in August 2021.
This number plate is given only to new private vehicles, commercial vehicles do not get such number plates.
It is very easy to identify it. This number plate, which looks very normal, has BH written in English, which means India.
The method of entering the number here is slightly different compared to the normal number plate.
In the number plate of this series, after BH, the registration number of the vehicle is written and there is also information about the category of the vehicle.
Talking about its format, it has the year of registration (YY), then BH (Bharat Series), then a 4 digit registration number and then two letters indicating the category of the vehicle which can be from A to Z.
For example, if the number of a car is 22BH 9999AA, then it means that this vehicle has been registered in Bharat Series in 2022. The next four digits are the registration number and then the category of the vehicle.
So you will ask that the normal number plate does not have only BH, it has the letters of the name of the state i.e. state registration, so what is special in this.
It has some special benefits, such as – this number plate is valid all over the country and there is no need to re-register the vehicle when moving from one state to another. Apart from this, you can avoid another hassle.
Actually, if you change your place with a state registration number, then you have to change the vehicle registration within 12 months of moving to the new state. If you do not do this, then you may violate the road rules. This can lead to the rejection of your car insurance claim.
The insurance company can reject the car insurance claim due to non-compliance of road rules. Whereas, with BH number you do not have this problem, because you do not have to change the vehicle registration when moving from one place to another.
In such a situation, you do not have to worry about car insurance coverage or claim validity.
Another thing is that on buying a new car with a normal number plate, one has to pay road tax for 15 years, which depends on the length of the vehicle, engine capacity and its type.
Whereas on getting a BH series number plate, one has to pay road tax for the next two years only.
After this, road tax has to be paid again every two years.
Road tax on vehicles with BH series number plates is calculated by deducting GST from the total price of the vehicle.
Another advantage of a vehicle with a BH series number plate is that you can easily sell the vehicle to a person from another state, because the vehicle registration is valid all over India.
PIB’s press release of the year 2023 states that the facility of Bharat Series number plate registration is available in 26 states or union territories of the country.
So all those people belonging to here, who are state and central government employees, defense personnel, bank employees or administrative service employees, then they can apply for BH series number plate.
As for the employees working in the private sector, they are also eligible for this, provided their company’s offices are registered in at least four states or union territories.

For this you will not need to go to the RTO office of your state. You can complete the registration process from home
For this, you can login to the VAHAN portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways yourself or take the help of an authorized automobile dealer.
For this, private sector employees have to fill Form 60. They also have to show employment ID along with work certificate, then submit the necessary documents.
After this, the authorities check the eligibility of the vehicle. After getting approval from the RTO for BH number, the necessary motor vehicle tax has to be paid.
Then the VAHAN portal generates BH series registration for your car.
As for whether there is any disadvantage in taking BH series? So most auto experts believe that the disadvantages of BH series number plate are negligible compared to the benefits.
If the vehicle is taken on loan, then the NOC of the bank may be required. The policy of many banks is not yet clear regarding BH series registration.
On the other hand, if in future a person wants to remove the BH number and get a normal state number plate, then the process can be a bit longer and complicated.
Also, the tax rates can be a bit higher.
For example – 8% tax for those vehicles whose price is up to Rs 10 lakh. 10% tax for those vehicles whose price is between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. 12% tax on vehicles worth more than Rs 20 lakh.
These rates are for petrol cars, 2% extra tax is levied on diesel and 2% less tax is levied on electric.
