Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing a big new challenge. Rahul Gandhi has directly accused the Prime Minister of “vote theft”. This serious allegation was made in a public rally, in which it was said that PM Modi has become the Prime Minister with stolen votes. The controversy focuses on the demand for digital election data, which, if given, could prove these claims. This bold allegation has made rapid headlines on social media and has sparked a strong debate across India.
During the “Vote Rights Rally”, Rahul Gandhi made strong claims against Prime Minister Modi. He said that if the Election Commission (EC) releases electronic data, it will be proved that the Prime Minister has won the election by stealing votes. Rahul Gandhi also said that after he made these allegations, the EC closed its websites in three or four states. He claimed that this was done so that no one could download the data.
These allegations have created a lot of uproar. Rahul Gandhi allegedly told five different methods of vote theft. He specifically said that PM Modi has become Prime Minister only because of the manipulated votes in 25 Lok Sabha seats. The opposition leader stressed that these votes were obtained through illegal means.
Rahul Gandhi not only made allegations; He also demanded a proper investigation. He urged the Karnataka government to investigate the alleged “vote theft” scam. Other political figures like Mallikarjun Kharge also joined him at the rally and supported the demand.
Experts believe that these claims of “vote theft” against PM Modi and Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar are very serious. He believes that the Supreme Court should take immediate action. However, the question is who will investigate these claims impartially? It seems unlikely that the current government or the Election Commission itself will conduct an impartial investigation, especially if it is they who have been charged.
Former IPS officer and security expert Yashvardhan Azad believes that the Election Commission is constitutionally bound to investigate. He found it strange that the EC had not welcomed any such investigations. Azad also highlighted a number of serious issues, such as:
Azad also raised the question whether these works are criminal offenses under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and whether a First Information Report (FIR) should be filed against them. He said that removing 6.5 million voters without any clear reason raises suspicion among the people.
The independence of the Election Commission is a big topic of discussion. Critics say that if the members of the Election Commission are retired IAS officers who are favorites of the government, then the Commission cannot truly be free. Yashvardhan Azad suggested that no retired officer should be appointed to the Election Commission. He believes that the Election Commission has a lot of staff and it should appoint respectable citizens who have nothing to do with the government. He says that this will make the entire process more fair and ensure proper investigation.
Supreme Court lawyer Mahmood Pracha also reiterated these concerns. He said the sitting Election Commissioners, including Gyanesh Kumar and Rajeev Kumar, were appointed illegally. Pracha claimed that they act like employees of RSS and BJP, helping them steal votes without any hesitation. He believes that that is why he is not ready to give the digital voter list, because it will expose the alleged theft.
The discussion often compared the label “vote thief” to another term “Panauti”, which was earlier used for PM Modi on social media. Many people are wondering whether the “vote thief” will stick just as reliably. The term “vote thief” is now trending rapidly on social media, suggesting that people are closely following these allegations.
Mahmood Pracha said that for a long time, many people have been calling PM Modi “EVM PM” (Electronic Voting Machine Prime Minister) instead of calling him “People’s PM”. He argued that small-scale vote theft has been happening for decades, such as removing the names of voters who are unlikely to support BJP or RSS. However, Pracha believes that ever since PM Modi came to power, this “theft” has become a massive “bulk robbery”.
Rahul Gandhi especially demanded the Election Commission to provide a machine-readable digital voter list. They believe that this data will prove their claims. He stressed that the EC’s websites were shut down in some states following his allegations, which he considered an attempt to withhold information.
The Election Commission asked Rahul Gandhi to submit an affidavit through the CEO of Karnataka. Mahmood Pracha clearly said that this request is illegal. He told that the form sent to Rahul Gandhi has no legal basis. Rahul Gandhi had not asked for adding or removing voters, which requires such objection. Pracha believes that Karnataka CEO was pressurized by Gyanesh Kumar to make this illegal request to divert public attention.
Pracha outlined two main avenues for dealing with the allegations:
1. FIR in Karnataka: Since the alleged crime took place in Karnataka, the state government should file FIR (First Information Report) against Gyanesh Kumar. An honest investigating officer can then seize the machine-readable digital voter list from the Election Commission. This data will become part of the case file, and anyone can take a certified copy from the court.
2. Mass Movement: Pracha believes that in this situation a big mass movement is also needed. Pracha referred to certain sections of the law that might apply, including section 32 of the Representation of the Peoples Act and several sections of the IPC such as 174, 316, 316A, 318, 377, and 1613. He told that these crimes can be punished with life imprisonment. He also informed that he himself has filed an affidavit on similar issues in Delhi, but the EC has not responded.
Allahabad High Court’s senior advocate Kamal Krishna Rai firmly believes that PM Modi won the elections by manipulating Uttar Pradesh, especially Varanasi. He said the results were manipulated in the last hours of counting, turning PM Modi’s defeat into victory. Rai stressed that this is not just a legal battle, but an issue of a mass movement, a matter of public anger and rebellion. He compared this situation to the events in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, where the people rebelled due to wrong elections.
Rai gave data of constituencies in Uttar Pradesh where victory and defeat had taken place by very small margins, which shows that BJP won these seats by wrong means. He stressed these issues:
Rai argued that Election Commission officials who allow such things should not be rewarded but punished. He said that the Chief Election Commissioner’s daughter was made the District Magistrate of Noida, which indicates a reward for loyalty.
Social activist Deepak Kabir admitted that this is not just “vote theft”, but “robbery”. He said that this is like the capture of democracy by powerful forces. Kabir explained that traditional election frauds, such as minor mistakes in voter lists, were understandable. But, he believes that the existing system, which is completely digital, allows large-scale and targeted manipulation.
Kabir raised serious questions about digital voter list:
He said that if someone can target people, communities or castes of a particular age and delete their votes with a single click, then it is a big threat to democracy. Kabir argued that when other services like train tickets are digital, refusing to give digital copies raises doubts. He believes that if the EC were to give away digital data, the alleged large-scale fraud would be exposed.
Kabir warned that if the EC acts as an agent to remove or add voters, it could lead to:
He also expressed concern that if officials, judges and bureaucracy start believing that the government will always win through these methods, they will not stand against it.
The panellists agreed that action was needed immediately. Independent analyst Siddharth Sharma reminded everyone of the 2024 Chandigarh mayoral election, where the Supreme Court had to intervene after clear evidence of manipulation by BJP officials was found. They argued that if the BJP could cheat in a small mayoral election, they could do worse in national elections.
Sharma pointed to the hypocrisy of the EC, which is seeking an affidavit from Rahul Gandhi, while similar complaints from chief ministers and veteran BJP leader L.K. Ignoring Advani’s previous statement, who questioned EVM’s integrity. He suggested that if the EC had nothing to hide, they should simply release the digital data, perhaps via WhatsApp as with the school’s marksheet.
Sharma explained three-way:
1. Legal action: As suggested by Mahmood Pracha, filing FIR in Karnataka and allowing honest police investigation.
2. Petitions and appeals: to continue to make official complaints and petitions to the EC.
3. Mass Movement: As Kamal Krishna Rai said, bringing people to the streets in a big mass movement.
Mahmood Pracha strongly believes that if FIR is registered in Karnataka, the police can confiscate the digital voter list of the entire country from the EC system. This will make the evidence public. Pracha said that if there is a big mass movement with these legal actions, PM Modi will not be able to remain the Prime Minister for long, as the government may fall from manipulated seats.
Kamal Krishna Rai said that PM Modi has lost all moral right to sit on the Prime Minister’s chair. He criticised the EC for holding elections in several stages, believing that this leaves room for manipulation, especially compared to elections by ballot paper in a day.
Deepak Kabir concluded by saying that it is not just about a democratic government, but about a quasi-dictatorial government that does not care about federalism, democracy or national unity. He urged the political parties to unite, forget their differences and lead a joint mass movement to save the democracy of the country.
The allegations of “vote theft” against Prime Minister Modi are a very important moment for India’s democracy. Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have described it as a “do or die” situation and called for a “struggle” like the Quit India Movement. The way forward will go through both legal challenges and mass movement. In the coming months, it will be known whether these allegations bring any change in the political environment of India or whether the title of “vote thief” becomes a permanent part of the national discussion.
