Positive Impact Of Use Of Artificial Intelligence (AI) In Healthcare Sector: SMS Can Learn

1) Fast-tracking, diagnosis and treatment: During COVID 19, the entire medical industry faced the need of fast tracking of disease, diagnosis and treatment. Fast diagnosis and treatment is not limited to COVID 19 disease alone as elsewhere. Also, healthcare professionals need to detect different types of viruses spreading at a rapid pace. AI-based algorithms and techniques help in faster detection of the disease. AI-based algorithms can collect information from large amounts of data and provide the correct output. Like all other industries, the healthcare industry also has a shortage of human resources. AI can overcome the shortage of human resources, but it cannot replace them. Artificial Intelligence (AI) helps in effective early detection, diagnosis and eventually, algorithms helped in finding the connection between treatment techniques and patient outcomes.

2) Empower the healthcare sector: AI can empower the healthcare industry as it will help in reducing human contact. The human workforce is limited, especially in developing countries. A pandemic like COVID-19 has exposed the shortage of medical professionals across the world. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can empower the healthcare industry by providing the necessary skills in terms of technology in the present and future. The minimum doctor-patient ratio recommended by the World Health Organization is 1:1000, but this ratio has not been achieved in many countries. There is a shortage of doctors. Countries like China and India are growing rapidly while the infrastructure and healthcare facilities are very limited. AI is needed to empower healthcare from the base. Technology can help all patients access medicine in the form of telemedicine. Using machine learning and statistical techniques, it is possible to analyze large data sets and notice trends.

3) Cost Reduction: All industries and sectors want to achieve economies of scale. The healthcare industry is also on the same lines. Healthcare professionals and doctors are looking for new ways to reduce costs and increase the speed of work. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help develop technology at a much lower cost as efficiency increases, and more focus will be placed on diagnosis. Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based healthcare allows doctors to assess medical professionals about meaningful patterns of data collection, and it reduces time, cost, and overall energy. Adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer an option; it is a must for generations to come.

4) AI can streamline work: The healthcare industry is witnessing a shortage of human resources. At such a time, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is useful in creating virtual nurses and medical assistants. They can monitor nurses and medical assistant activities and medication timetables. Those medical nurses and assistants with simulated intelligence can help strengthen the interconnection between patients and doctors. Necessary information can be provided to doctors. Artificial Intelligence (AI) modeling can be used to understand text and images. In daily life, medical professionals spend a lot of time in the documentation process, data entry, and sorting.

5) Faster information sharing and decision making: While the whole world is facing the COVID-19 problem, information sharing is quite relevant nowadays, at least in the medical field. Doctors around the world are working to find a vaccine for the COVID-19 disease. The whole world is facing this pandemic, so it is important to share information between doctors and physicians. Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based platforms can help share information based on specific patient data. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can also be used to track patterns identified in a patient to determine the probability of success or failure of a specific drug on the patient’s body. Physicians want to know the root causes of the problem and their solution to minimize potential medical risks. Decision making is much faster using an AI-based process.

Limitations Of Artificial Intelligence (AI) In Healthcare

1) Lack of emotions: Machines, programs, and algorithms do not work on emotions. Be it surgical robots or algorithms, all of them work according to a fixed program set. The systems are not logical in nature. They do not have any emotions or empathy towards patients. Human interaction always involves an emotional touch between the patient and medical staff, but that touch is missing in the machine. Medical staff is also flexible in their approach as trust-building takes place between medical patients and staff members. Devices are not dependent on trust and relationship building. The most significant setback is that physicians can change their approach when operations do not go as per plan. Sometimes, emotional attachments cause medical staff to go beyond the rules to save the patient’s life. Machines cannot violate rules, and they work according to the standard plan set. Social and emotional intelligence is also required for effective functioning. Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based devices can work with minor errors, but they can create problems for both patients and medical staff when there are significant deviations.

2) Fear of unemployment among medical workers/employees: AI-based systems can create fear of unemployment and job insecurity in the minds of medical professionals who are aligned in analysis, diagnosis, etc. However, whether the technology is overall a replacement for human or will act as a value-added tool in the medical profession. There is a possibility that the machine may get stuck, or the algorithm may fail; in that case, faulty diagnosis may occur. The Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered system is based on information collected through various datasets. Suppose an error occurs in uploading the data, it can create problems in the overall structure and effective functioning. Lack of information leads to wrong diagnosis and decision making in the system.) Training and right platform: It is not easy to work on AI-based platforms without adequate training. The adoption of the technology is still in its initial stages, and needs to be refined. Medical practitioners need to invest carefully in finding the right partners and implementing the right platforms to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI cannot be implemented in every type of venue. Such a solution requires good accuracy and planning before implementation, and training of staff members is essential.

Conclusion

AI is an emerging and promising technology for early detection of coronavirus infection and monitoring the condition of affected individuals. By building supportive algorithms, it can significantly improve the uniformity of treatment and decision making. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is beneficial in treating COVID-19 afflicted patients and proper cost-effective monitoring of their health. As SMEs in the healthcare sector have limited finances, AI based algorithms are cost-effective in nature. It is also beneficial to facilitate viral research by analyzing existing data. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can assist in creating effective treatment regimes, preventive initiatives, and drug and vaccine development and thus empower the healthcare sector.
