Recently, the Government of India has launched the e-Zero FIR service to deal with incidents related to cyber crime. The aim of this initiative is to strengthen cyber security and speed up the investigation process of such cases.
It is worth noting that in the last few years, incidents of cyber crime have increased rapidly in the country. More than 7.4 lakh cyber crime complaints were registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) between January 2024 and April 2024. In these four months, cyber criminals caused a loss of more than Rs 1,750 crore to the people.
At the same time, according to the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C), an average of 7,000 cyber crime complaints were received daily in May 2024. The worrying thing is that I4C has anticipated fraud of more than Rs 1.2 lakh crore in the year 2025. In such a situation, this new e-Zero FIR facility of the government can play an important role in preventing and investigating cyber crime.
So, today in the ‘Cyber Literacy’ column, we will talk about e-Zero FIR in detail. Also, we will know-
Expert: Rahul Mishra, Cyber Security Advisor, Uttar Pradesh Police
Let us first know how much loss people have suffered due to cyber fraud in the last few years.
According to NCRP data, in the last four years, a total loss of Rs 33,165 crore has been incurred in India due to cyber fraud. The surprising thing is that about 69% of this total loss i.e. Rs 22,812 crore has been recorded only in the year 2024.
According to media reports, tier-2 and tier-3 cities are becoming major centers of these cyber crimes, which shows that digital fraud is no longer limited to metro cities.
Question-1: What is e-Zero FIR?
Answer- e-Zero FIR is a new digital facility, which works to automatically convert complaints of cyber financial fraud lodged on NCRP or cyber helpline number 1930 into Zero FIR.
Initially, this facility will be applicable to cases of financial fraud of more than Rs 10 lakh. Its purpose is to start the investigation process immediately without delay, so that the victim can get relief in time. At present, this initiative has been started as a pilot project in Delhi. The government intends to implement it across the country after its success.
Question-2: What does Zero FIR mean?
Answer- Zero FIR is a facility in which any person can register an FIR in any police station, whether the crime has occurred in the jurisdiction of that police station or not. This makes it easier for the victim to lodge a complaint immediately, especially in an emergency.
Later this FIR is transferred to the police station of the concerned jurisdiction, where further investigation takes place. E-Zero FIR is a digital form of Zero FIR, which has been specially designed for cases of cyber financial fraud. Its purpose is that as soon as the complaint is received, the system should convert it into an automatic FIR, so that there is no delay in the investigation.
Question-3: What has to be done to register an e-Zero FIR?
Answer- For this, you have to go to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) and register a complaint online or you can also register your complaint by calling the cyber helpline number 1930. As soon as the complaint is registered, the system will automatically convert it into a zero FIR, so that the investigation process can be started immediately.
Question-4: What has the government said about e-Zero FIR?
Answer- Union Home Minister Amit Shah officially launched the e-Zero FIR initiative on 19 May 2025. On this occasion, while posting on his X handle, he said,
“The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) has launched a new initiative e-Zero FIR, which aims to catch cyber criminals faster and make the investigation process more effective. This facility has currently been started as a pilot project in Delhi. Under this system, cyber financial fraud complaints of more than Rs 10 lakh registered on the NCRP portal or helpline number 1930 will automatically be converted into FIR. “
He further said that this new system will speed up the investigation process and ensure quick and strict action against cyber criminals.
Question-5: How does e-Zero FIR work?
Answer- The e-Zero FIR system works on an automatic process, so that investigation in cyber fraud cases can be started without delay. Its functioning is as follows.
If a person has lodged a complaint of cyber fraud of more than Rs 10 lakh on the NCRP portal or cyber helpline number 1930, then this complaint will automatically turn into a zero FIR.
This FIR will be registered in the e-crime police station and after that it will be forwarded to the cyber police station of the concerned area. The complainant will have to go to the concerned cyber police station within 3 days and convert this zero FIR into a formal FIR, so that further investigation can start.
Question-6: What is the legal validity of e-Zero FIR?
Answer- E-Zero FIR is fully legally recognized under Section 173 (1) and 1 (ii) of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS). This has made it legally valid to register and transfer FIR through digital means.
Question- 7: Will any information be received after the e-Zero FIR is registered?
Answer- After the automatic zero FIR is registered by the system, you will probably receive a complaint number or a reference ID. This will be necessary to track the complaint.
Question-8: What documents may be required to convert e-Zero FIR into formal FIR?
Answer- When you go to the police station, you may need details of your complaint, proof of transaction (such as bank statement, transaction ID), identity card and other necessary documents.
Question-9: Is there a guarantee of return of lost money by filing e-Zero FIR?
Answer- If the victim reports quickly, it will speed up the investigation and action taken in the ‘golden hour’ will increase the chances of return of money. However, it does not guarantee the return of money.
