Telephone services in India started in the year 1914. The computer era in India was started in 1952, when the first analog computer was installed at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. This was followed in the year 1955 by the first digital computer, a German Eraisree 2 M computer. With this, India became the second country in Asia after Japan to adopt computer technology.
After this, India made its first effort in the field of computer manufacturing and the first indigenous computer in this direction, TIFRAC, was prepared in 1960. This was followed in 1966 by the Indian Statistical Institute and Jaipur University with a transistorized computer called ISIJU. During this time, Computer Society of India was established in the year 1965. After this, in the year 1970, the Department of Electronics was established, whose objective was to promote the use of public sector computers.
In 1978, along with IBM, private sector companies also started manufacturing computers. In the year 1984, the Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) was established. Moving forward, the Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) was also established in the year 1988. C-DAC had prepared MotD, the prototype of supercomputer in the year 1990, which gained great fame in the Super Computing Show held in Jaipur in the same year. With this, India left the countries of the world behind and came to a prominent place in Asia after America.
On July 1, 1991, India had tested by building the Param-8000 supercomputer through previous private efforts. It is clear that India has been continuously progressing the computer era on its soil starting from the year 1952 and has established its merceristic standards in the computing field.
Internet services in India were initiated by Meridian Sanchar Nigam Limited on 15 August 1995. In the year 1998, the government had also authorized the private sector service-provider for internet services. With the entry of computers and internet into public use in India, the outbreak of cyber crimes gradually started increasing. The first registered cyber crime case in India was that of Yahoo vs Akash Arora. This case occurred in 1999. In this, defendant Akash Arora was accused of using Yahooindia.com‘, the domain name of Yahoo.
The second case was that of Manoj Kaushik and others vs. Madhavraj Joshi and others, in which the Court decided that viewing e-mail accounts to husband and father-in-law without their permission constituted a violation of Section 43 of the Information Technology Act, 2000
It is noteworthy that during this time, the Government of India had enacted the Information Technology Act, 2000 to deal with cyber crimes and after this the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 was also issued.
If we look at the cyber crimes registered in India in the current circumstances, it becomes clear that cyber crimes are continuously increasing here. The figures presented by the National Crime Bureau are serious. In the country according to the Bureau:
It is clear from these figures that earlier cyber crimes started in India much later than other countries of the world, but the number of cyber crimes here is increasing very fast. There were a mere 966 cases in the year 2010, which has surpassed 44,000 in 10 years.
Cybercrime in india (2010–2019)
Number of cyber crimes in the year
It is clear from the study that there has been a sharp increase in the number of cyber crimes in India.
Overall, today cutting-edge resources related to information and communication technology like computers, laptops and mobile phones and smartphones are available at various places and with the people all over the world. The unfortunate thing is that the one who has nothing also has at least one mobile phone, because now life is impossible from human point of view without a mobile phone. Barring figures that are considered negligible, every common man in this world has now become a part of the information revolution. Sir, the information revolution has engulfed the activities of the entire world. The other aspect of this is that today we all remain connected to information media and communication technology all the time. Most of the needs of our lives are now being fulfilled through online medium.
Now the emphasis of citizens being present on digital level has also increased across the world. Even in developed countries like India, everything from Aadhaar card to online services and facilities, which have become a new synonym for personal identity of citizens, have become digital and online.
In this era of communication technology, the biggest challenge before the police forces is that how to stop the new technologies of crimes by fully anticipating the increasing crime trends in the blind race of the digital world? This is because we can understand the infrastructure of cyber-crimes and can also make prevention efforts by estimating their seriousness and possibilities to some extent from their trends so far, but we cannot use the knowledge of information technology illegally. Cannot face criminals who use it.
Overall, cyber crimes are continuously increasing all over the world and to prevent them, the first and foremost need is for people to be aware of cyber crimes. That is why a new word ‘cyber-understanding’ is mentioned on the page first in the book, because unless the ‘cyber-understanding’ is strong in the public, cyber crimes will continue to happen and these will be subjected to continuous processes for an indefinite period of time for positive action. The agencies involved will continue to handle the workload. At the same time, users and victims will not be able to get justice at the right time.
