ChatGPT: The Man Who Dreamed Of Changing The World Of Artificial Intelligence

Sam Altman – Founder of ChatGPT, which is famous all over the world. The story begins in 2015, when Sam founded his company ‘Open-AI’ and then came the turn of a fast virtual robot like ChatGPT.

We thought why not ask ChatGPT about its founder Sam Altman. The question was – Who is Sam Altman?

So the answer of this AI (Artificial Intelligence) search engine launched on November 30 came, “Sam Altman is an American entrepreneur and technologist. He was earlier the CEO of a company named ‘Loopt’ and is now famous as the President of ‘Open-AI’.”

Apart from this, the search engine also told about Sam that he is a very influential person in the technical community and gives lectures on issues related to Artificial Intelligence.

All such information from ChatGPT is based on facts or their simplifications. The system itself writes about itself that, “It does not make any subjective statement about any character or person.”

After such a response from ChatGPT, we tried to gather information on Sam Altman through other means. Because our present is going to change rapidly due to him, his discoveries and new technological initiatives. ChatGPT and image generator DALL-E are such efforts.

First of all, ‘non-artificial’ things

We got hold of an interview of Sam Altman given to the ‘New York Times’. In this, Sam has said that, “When he was eight years old, he dismantled one of Apple’s early computers, the ‘Macintosh’. In this way, he started taking interest in computer programming.”

In the same interview, Sam also said that, “Having his own computer also affected his sexuality. It made it easier to communicate in different groups during his teenage years.”

At the age of 16, he told his parents that he was gay. After this, he also made his gay identity public in his school.

After school, Sam got admission in the famous Stanford University in California, USA. Here his subject was computer science. But he could not complete his degree here.

Together with his friends, he decided to make an app through which people can share their location with others. ‘LOOPT’ is such an app. Sam’s first unique idea with his friends.

We are talking about 2005. This was years before the arrival of WhatsApp. During this time, Facebook started spreading around the world.

Loopt did not get much importance then, but it opened the door to big technology investments and started Sam’s career as an entrepreneur.

Loopt was first supported by Y Combinator (YC). It was one of the big companies investing in startups at that time, which had invested in apps like Airbnb and Dropbox.

Sam Altman sold his first project for $ 40 million. Sam used this money to expand the scope of his interest as well as to invest in other ideas. This investment was mostly made in YC’s ideas, of which he was the chairman from 2014 to 2019.

During this time, he founded ‘Open-AI’ along with Elon Musk. With this company, he entered the world of Artificial Intelligence, about which he was very curious, but also had many fears.

The human side of AI

‘Open-AI’ is a research company. According to the company’s website, its mission is to ensure that Artificial Intelligence is made beneficial for the entire humanity, and not cause any harm.’

This statement of the company reflects Sam Altman’s old fear, in which he had said that “Artificial Intelligence can also prove to be a ‘lethal weapon’ against humanity.”

In a detailed report published in ‘The New Yorker’ in 2016, Sam also says that the union of both technologies is necessary for the future.

He had said, “Either we will be under the control of Artificial Intelligence, or it will control us.” Elon Musk had shared this idea with Sam Altman. Elon Musk was also associated with ‘Open-AI’ till 2018.

But he parted ways with his company Tesla citing conflict of interests. However, Musk continues to invest in ‘Open-AI’ and other projects to gain control over artificial intelligence.

One of these is ‘Neuralink’, which tries to connect our brain to the computer. Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk believes that humans can keep pace with artificial intelligence in this way.

Musk says, “Our voice will reach computers very slowly, like the voice of a whale. This will make it difficult for computers to process information in terabytes.”

This risky outlook on the future inspired Musk and Sam Altman to work in the field of artificial intelligence. This same outlook is also working behind preparing the strategy for ChatGPT and DALL-E.

Current state of AI

This risky outlook on the future inspired Musk and Sam Altman to work in the field of artificial intelligence. This is the approach behind the strategy for ChatGPT and DALL-E.

In a conversation with Daily News Letter, which keeps an eye on the happenings in the technology world and Silicon Valley, Sam Altman said a few weeks ago, “One thing I am completely convinced about is that the most responsible way to connect this system to people is to introduce it gradually.”

Sam further says, “In this way, we can easily introduce it to people, institutions and policy makers. So that they can feel this technology, know what this system can do and what it cannot. It is not right to suddenly introduce a super powerful system.”

According to ‘Dot CSV’, a channel on YouTube that shows information and analysis about Artificial Intelligence, this strategy has proved to be decisive regarding this system. For the last 20 years, big technology companies have worked under this strategy.

Analyzing the statements of Sam Altman, the channel says, “The people leading artificial intelligence have a tendency similar to that of Silicon Valley. Their motto is to move fast and change things. This is the philosophy of working quickly, under which products are launched without thinking about the complications that will arise from them.”

Explaining Sam’s efforts, the channel emphasizes, “This is not the case with Sam Altman. Here the question is not of speed, but to bring out the products in an incomplete state. This makes people gradually adapt to the product.”

This is what is happening in the case of ChatGPT and DALL-E. Many people associated with academics and creative fields are criticizing it.

In a Twitter post in December, Sam Altman also admitted that “ChatGPT is incredibly limited. But it is very good at creating a false image of greatness. It would be wrong to rely on its information for any important matter right now.”

In that Twitter post, Sam Altman ended his statement by saying that “This is just a glimpse of the progress to come. Much remains to be done to establish its robustness and truth.”

Sam Altman also wrote similar things about ChatGPT in response to questions on that Twitter post. Many questions on the post were related to biases regarding chat.

Sam admitted that, “ChatGPT has many shortcomings in terms of bias. We are engaged in fixing it. We are working towards fixing its default settings and determining impartiality, so that it can give results according to the preference of the user.”

Sam Altman also said that this work is not as easy as it looks. It will take more time to achieve this.

What will happen in the future of AI?

Sam Altman will turn 38 this April. Recently, he found his three-year-old message, in which he had predicted some important technological achievements by 2025.

These achievements include making nuclear fusion effective on a prototype scale, making artificial intelligence available to all people in the industry and developing new gene editing technology to treat at least one serious disease affecting humans the most.

In that tweet, Sam had expressed serious concern about nuclear fusion.

Altman invested in a company named ‘Heliyon Energy’ for years, so that research and resources could be increased to produce cheap electricity. This company is working towards producing clean and low-cost electricity by obtaining fuel from water.

There are still two years left for even one of Sam’s three predictions to come true. But one of these, Artificial Intelligence, is already taking concrete shape. This is being possible because of Sam’s company Open-AI.

This company was created by Sam Altman to achieve those things which he thinks will be theirs in the future. For this, he continued to invest for years in technological and scientific progress.

About the future he envisions, in an article in ‘The New Yorker’, Sam also wrote that, “In this too our values will be the same as they are today.”

In the context of America, he also said, “I love this country very much. Whatever the time, democracy will be safe only in an economy in which there is development.”

Sam is completely committed to this. He says, “Every experiment in democracy without the benefit of economic development will fail.”

Will he be able to make it possible?

In the early days of his career, Sam Altman attracted big investors to invest in his projects. Especially during the period of ‘Y Combinator’, in which he himself made a big investment.

However, no one knows his total assets exactly. But some recent announcements clearly indicate that he is moving towards the list of billionaires.

‘Open-AI’ which was started as a non-profit project, has today become a hybrid company with limited profit.

A few weeks ago, ‘The Wall Street Journal’ mentioned in an article that ‘Open-AI’ is close to becoming a $2900 million start-up despite earning very little profit.

After this, Sam’s company signed a very big deal with Microsoft. Under this deal of uncertain times and billions of dollars, big work will be seen in the field of personal computing, internet, smart devices and cloud in the coming days.

This week, the subscription version of ChatGPD has been launched in the US. It has been started only in the US as an experiment. For its one month subscription, the user has to pay 20 dollars.

These changes will not affect the reliability of artificial intelligence and the commitment to keep it safe.

But the question is, will this be possible. This is something that we can ask from ChatGPT in the coming days.
