Artificial Intelligence: How Voice Causes Fraud, How To Avoid It

Amidst the rapid changes in the world of technology, people are being advised not to “trust everything and everyone”. Experts associated with the field of cyber security have issued this advisory amid reports of fraud with youth and senior citizens through Artificial Intelligence.

Big economic frauds are being committed against a person by creating his voice through AI. There is no evidence left behind in this process.

In such a situation, it is difficult to even investigate, leave alone bring back the looted amount. It has reached such a stage that people are being advised not to pick up unknown numbers or calls from unknown people.

Need to change thinking

Experts in the cyber security sector believe that to face these challenges, it is necessary to bring about a change in thinking.

“In the new world you can’t trust every person or everything”, CloudSEK CEO Rahul Shashi tells. You have to mold yourself into a person who doubts everything. And don’t trust all things and all people. Actually you need to make a change in thinking.”

A shocking case has come to light in Madhya Pradesh in which a person was called and financially defrauded. The caller told the caller that his teenage son had raped her and would have to pay fifty thousand rupees to arrest her.

Cyber security

The caller also heard his son’s crying voice to the father. On this the father immediately transferred fifty thousand rupees. Later it was revealed that his son was absolutely fine and it was a fake call.

This case matches with those cases of fraud in which the fraudster makes a person’s voice and calls his friend saying that he is stuck in an unknown country and needs money immediately.

“This happened to a friend of mine”, says Shashidhar CN, cyber security expert at SecureIT Consultancy Services. She received a message pleading for help in her friend’s voice on social media platforms saying she had lost all her belongings and needed financial help urgently

Shashidhar CN says, “When this friend present in India called and asked about his friend’s condition, he was surprised to know that his friend was absolutely fine”. When he told his friend that this was being said on his social media account, his friend was stunned to hear his fake voice. This sound was the same as her.”

Such frauds are happening with uneducated people as well as educated people.

Giving an example of this, Shashidhar says, “A few days ago I got a call. I was told that this call was from the Telecom Department. It was said that if I do not give KYC details by night then all the numbers issued in my name will be closed. Then said press a number to proceed…Anyone can be fooled”

“I knew this was a case of phishing in which they take your KYC details. After this they commit fraud. I checked this number on an app that identifies the numbers. From this I came to know that this number was from Madhya Pradesh. I blocked the number and defined it as a fraud on the app so that if someone gets a call from this number, they know that it is a fraud call

How easy it is to create voice through AI

“In such cases, the person picking up the phone or receiving the message should not blindly trust such message or phone”, he says

Shashidhar says there are many tools available on the internet that can sample someone’s voice and create deep-fake videos with their “voice and manner of speaking that cannot be traced”. You’ll be stunned using these tools.”

At the same time, Rahul Shashi says, “I can call you and record the call which will give me enough data to make a fake call”. Some algorithms require seed data. I can get seed data by making a video or normal call to you. This is quite easy. Anyone can talk to an unknown person on a call. His voice can be recorded for committing fraud during this conversation”

At the same time, cyber law educationist Naavi Vijayashankar says, “For most such fraudsters, social media is like a treasure from where they can copy videos and photographs along with voices”. It seems that their focus is on children’s social media accounts where they can get as much information as possible”

At present technology is available to make deep fakes. But there is no technology to face it.

Vijayashankar says, “In a way, this is an issue of awareness”. People react in panic. But this can be solved by running a large-scale awareness campaign. Another is no solution.”

Vijayshankar goes a step further and suggests that the banking sector should protect the information of the victims with the help of technology.

He says, “A person makes online payment if he becomes a victim of such fraud”. Since this is an official payment, the bank does not pay attention to it unless the amount is larger than the transactions normally done by the account holder. When they complain about this to the bank, they can contact the bank in which the money has been deposited. One drawback in our banking system is that the victim’s bank does not contact the bank where the offender has an account. This system should be automated.”
